The Unsolved Ciphers of the Zodiac Killer

The Unsolved Ciphers of the Zodiac Killer

On October 27, 1970 the Halloween card pictured here was sent by the 'Zodiac Killer' to Paul Avery, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. Pretty scary, huh?

The memories of this year's Halloween may be fading, but it makes sense to be wary of any suspicious person following you and perhaps not go out there alone after dark.

If you were to forget these words of warning, the thought of the Zodiac Killer might serve as a reminder. The Zodiac Killer was arguably the most devious murderer in the history of American serial killers.

He claimed to have murdered 37 people in his letters to the San Francisco Chronicle. He has not been caught yet. Maybe he is even still alive, living next door or a few blocks away from you, planning to make a return with another heinous crime.

This letter was another piece of evidence. It was found in December, 1966 in Riverside City College Library, California.

This most mysterious story began on the night of December 20, 1968. A motorist discovered the dead bodies of two teenagers, Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday, on a dark road near Benicia, California. The investigation gave up no clues.

Then, while people were trying to come to terms with of the shocking news, a mysterious call was received at Vallejo Police Department less than month later. On July 4, 1969, right after midnight, an unknown caller reported another horrible incident that took place in a public park some miles away. This time a young couple had been murdered. In a monotone voice, the caller claimed responsibility for the slayings. This is believed to be the first call made by the Zodiac Killer himself.

Zodiac Logo

From this point on, the killer started communicating via letters and greetings cards. Each of these messages was concluded with the crossed-circle design pictured above. Later it became known as the Zodiac signature. These letters as well as some coded messages were sent by the killer to different, well-known newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner and the Vallejo Times Herald.

It was the Zodiac Killer’s demand that the cryptograms be published on each newspaper's front page by August 1, 1969 or else other murders would take place.

This is a very important piece of the ‘340-symbol cipher code’ mailed in November, 1969 to the San Francisco Chronicle. The code has still not been cracked. The letter also included one third of a cryptogram.

By sending a cipher code as well as a teasing cipher key, the Zodiac Killer was always trying to puzzle the investigators. Even after almost 40 years, most of the cryptograms are still unsolved.

Most of the letters contained threats and the killer’s long descriptions of his fantasies. He demanded that the people of the Bay Area wore “some nice Zodiac butons” [sic] – the crossed circle symbol – and that failure to do so would result in their death.

Top secret letter, Postmarked: May 2, 1978. Sent to: KHJ-TV, Los Angeles, California

'Exorcist letter', mailed on January 29, 1974 to the San Francisco Chronicle.

For years, the case of Zodiac Killer has been the subject of debate and controversy. Many people are still trying to solve the case and decode the ciphers. The information is there in the form of photographs, videos, letters, sketches, police reports as well as another top secret letter. But the investigators are no less in the dark.

As Wikipedia points out, the Zodiac Killer's crimes, as well as the letters and cryptograms sent to police and newspapers, have inspired many movies, novels and TV programs, not to mention other serial killers. Some of the famous movies are: Dirty Harry, The Zodiac Killer, Zodiac Killer, Zodiac, The Zodiac, and The Exorcist III.

A sketch of the Zodiac killer based on witness testimonies

There were many suspects in the case. Arthur Lee Allen, one of them, died in 1992. Among the other suspects was a man named Jack Tarrance, also now dead. However there is always the possibility that the Zodiac Killer is still out there and does not want his work to be credited to someone else. He clearly liked the attention.

Maybe he is dead by now; but maybe he is still out there, watching the world, while the world tries to solve his cryptograms and the mystery of his unforgettable crimes.

Though searching for the Zodiac Killer has become a part-time venture for professional detectives today, for amateurs, it is still a full-time obsession...

Take caution if you sense someone following you...

GMMXLE Gone, GMMXIE Coming: The way Google welcomes 2011

With the New Year 2011 ringing the doorbell, Google has just doodled a new logo on its homepage – the GMMXIE. One may wonder what actually may be the meaning of GMMXLE or GMMXIE? The MMX and the MMXI are Roman numerals which translates to 2010 and 2011 respectively, the year we are leaving behind today and the year we are welcoming this New Year’s Eve. The new doodle from Google links to a search results for the term “New Year’s Eve”, a way Google says Goodbye to the Year 2010 and welcomes 2011.

Google has made it a trend to come up with new Doodles each occasion, each doodle meaning something. And this time its a Roman way of welcoming the New Year.

A Happy New Year 2011 from the Forestlaneshul Team.

Indiana Earthquake: 3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Central Indiana

Indiana Earthquake: 3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Central Indiana
A 3.8 magnitude earthquake rattled portions of Central Indiana Thursday morning--and was even felt by some Chicago residents.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially estimated the quake's strength was magnitude 4.2, but since lowered that number, according to the Associated Press.

Residents of Chicago, Naperville and Buffalo Grove, Illinois told NBC Chicago they felt their beds shaking and saw their ceiling fans move early Thursday. A geophysicist told the AP a 3.8 magnitude quake "would feel like a loaded truck passing by."

The Indiana Geological Survey had no records of a 3.8 magnitude earthquake in Central Indiana ever, according to the Indianapolis Star. The director of the IGS told the Star that the quakes location--about 3 miles below the ground--was "highly irregular" and "extremely rare."

Indiana's last major earthquake was on April 18, 2008. The 5.2 magnitude quake was the strongest to hit the state in 40 years, the Star reports.

No injuries or damage had been reported as of 9:30 a.m. CT.

This win is up there: VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman thinks this Indian side is a lot different from the ones that toured South Africa in the past and stands a very good chance to win its first series here.

A day after India’s come-from-behind victory, the Man of the Match of the Durban Test says the team went into the game with a lot of aggression. “Coming into this Test, we were very upset with what had happened in Centurion. The aggression was more here. As a fielding and bowling unit, we were more aggressive. That’s what we discussed before the second Test. This kind of aggression was lacking in Centurion,” Laxman said.

Laxman, who scored a match-winning 96 in the second innings of the Durban Test, thinks the turning point was the approach of the team on Day Two after being bowled out for 228 in the first innings.

“The turning point was our bowling on the second day. We knew the game would be gone with one partnership in their first innings. We did not let that happen. The body language, bowling and fielding were the difference between Durban and Centurion.”

Laxman rates the win as one of the side’s best. “This win is up there. This is supposedly the quickest and bounciest wicket in South Africa. It gives you that much additional joy. The Durban wicket is the most challenging one. It gives a lot of satisfaction to all of us.”

Laxman thinks the experience of previous tours has made the side more confident. “The key factor was the expectations we had coming into this tour. Playing in South Africa before has helped us. The win we had in Johannesburg in 2006 has also helped. We are probably much more confident than we were during past tours,” Laxman added.

The middle-order batsman thinks the team needs to get a decent start in the third Test. “As for Cape Town, it all depends on how we start. The first day of the match usually sets the tone for the Test. It is important that we play to the best of our abilities. We don’t have to think about the end result of winning the series. If we do well the small things, the result will look after itself,” he added.

Personally, Laxman is disappointed to have missed out on a century in Durban but is satisfied from the team’s point of view. “My conversion rate is not that great. From 49 fifties and 16 centuries. I would have been happy if I had got a century here but from the team’s perspective, I’m very satisfied to have bailed the side out of a very tough situation.”

Laxman, who has been consistently helping the side by accumulating runs with the tail-enders, says he is able to do that because of his personal rapport with them. “It boils down to experience and my personal rapport with them. Luckily, they work hard on their batting. So they take a lot of responsibility. We set ourselves small targets. We look at scoring five runs or seeing one over off. The most important thing is to know if they are comfortable. That’s what I have learnt. If one batsman is comfortable facing one bowler, only then do I give him the strike. It keeps the scoreboard ticking and shifts the pressure back on the opposition.”

A New Year's Eve Party at Home

Ideas for planning a New Year's Eve party for the whole family. Skip the fancy parties, the expensive dinners and the hassle of finding a babysitter. Stay home and enjoy New Year's Eve with the kids, friends and family and have a great time. Here are some fun ideas to make New Year's Eve a family affair!

New Year’s Eve.. a night to say good bye to the old and ring in the new.. For many people it is a night of revelry and fancy festivities. At our home it has always been a night of family and friends gathering together for food and fun. When our children were little, and we were much younger, they hated for us to go out on New Year’s Eve, even when I bribed them with their favorite babysitter, who I had booked months in advance. When our oldest got to be 6, she told me that all she wanted for Christmas was for us to stay home on New Year’s Eve and have a big New Year’s Eve party with the kids.

From that little request, our family began a New Year’s Eve tradition that lasted over 10 years. We invited friends over with their children, family with the cousins and began holding our "Ring It and Sing It " New Year’s Eve party. No fancy outfits, no costly dinners or expensive parties and no babysitter. That tradition turned out to be one of our family’s favorite holiday celebrations. Now that the kids are older and out on their own, I still get melancholy on New Year’s Eve as I remember all the fun we had when the house was noisy, chaotic and filled with kids. We would let them decorate the house with New Year’s decorations, get hats, balloons and noisemakers.

They would make Countdown Cards for the number of kids that would be there each year. If there were 15 of them, at 11:45 as the big clock on the Dick Clark New Years special would countdown, they would each come parading into the main room doing silly dances or cheers, holding their Countdown Number as the clock ticked down. Everyone else would applaud each one and blow their noisemakers! The kids were always each hoping that they would get the #1 card and be the last one before we all crowded around the television to watch the Big Ball in Times Square drop down to officially signal the start of the New Year!

Sometimes all the adults still gather here but it is not quite the same without all the kids and their enthusiasm to stay up til midnight and enjoy the hoopla of the New Year’s countdown. Last year our 2 oldest children asked if they could plan a reprise of our old New Year’s Eve parties at the house. Sure enough, they did and it was wonderful and great fun.. perhaps a new tradition is in the making. So if you are contemplating what to do this New Year’s Eve.. maybe a family New Year’s Eve party at home with family and friends could be an option for your own group.

If you would like to see the fun that our oldest planned for last year’s New Year’s Eve "encore party," as well as our annual entertainment and our traditional special ending to our family New Year’s eve party see A Family New Year’s Eve party.at Celebration Ideas Online.

New Jersey Mayor Uses Twitter to Help Residents Through Blizzard

Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Cory Booker is at it again — he’s been on Twitter since the start of this year’s “Snowpocalypse,” letting citizens know about the city’s cleanup efforts and personally digging out the cars of those in need.

This isn’t the first time that Booker — the de facto main character of the documentary series Brick City — has used the micro-blogging service to help those who need aid. During last winter’s blizzard, Booker came to the rescue when Jersey resident Ravie Rave tweeted that her elderly father’s walk was in need of shoveling.

This year, Booker is out in full force once more, keeping citizens up to date on the progress of cleanup, delivering supplies and getting Newark residents on the road again.

What do you think of the mayor’s use of Twitter? Do you wish your local government was as tech-savvy as Booker?

Malaysian Fans Shone Cheat Laser !

Soccer Extreme : Indonesian Goalkeeper Muhammad Haris Maulana (Markus Horison) said he was dazzled by green lasers shone by Malaysian fans at the Bukit Jalil Stadium during Indonesia’s 3-0 loss to hosts Malaysia in the Suzuki Cup final First Leg in Kuala Lumpur, Sunday, 26th Dec 2010.

In the first half, I saw beams of green light shining on the ball when I was preparing for a goal kick,” the 29-year-old told Markus Horison.

In the second half, I realized the light came from fans behind the Malaysian goal since it shone directly in my face when I was saving the balls.

The light forced me to turn my head away.

He admitted that Malaysian fans had failed to uphold the spirit of fair play, setting off firecrackers on stages many times and shining the laser in the eyes of Indonesian players.

It is very dangerous and can cause eye injury,” he said. “I can’t understand why they did it.

During the game, the Coach of the Indonesia squad, Alfred Riedl, complained about the laser to match officials who merely promised to stop it.

What is Onomatopoeia

What is Onomatopoeia

What is onomatopoeia? It's all around us and we use it more often then you can realize. Want to learn more about onomatopoeia? Then keep reading...

What is onomatopoeia? We can understand the answer to this question from different angles, but the explanation that I'm familiar with is - when a word, any word is created to help describe an item, name, action, or thing, it takes on the name from the sound it makes. But let me remind you that onomatopoeia is not similar to cacophony (a loud, blaring noise) or euphony (a harmonious and pleasing sound, i.e. music). Onomatopoeia takes on the challenge of making sense of various sounds which we hear around us. Now that we know what is onomatopoeia, why don't we see few examples of the same.

Examples of Onomatopoeia for Kids
To help the kids learn the meaning and usage of onomatopoeia, we have provided a table with onomatopoeia words. Go through the list with them and see if they can identify when and how these sounds are made.

Achoo Ahem Baa Bah
Bam Bang Bark Bash
Bawl Beep Belch Blare
Blurt Boing Boink Bong
Bonk Boo Boom Bubble
Bump Buzz Chatter Cheep
Chirp Clang Clank Clap
Clatter Click Clink Cluck
Clunk Crackle Crunch Cuckoo
Ding Drip Eek Fizz
Flick Flutter Giggle Growl
Gurgle Hack Hiccup Hiss
Honk Huh Hum Itch
Jangle Knock La Meow
Moo Mumble Murmur Neigh
Oink Ouch Ow Phew
Ping Plop Plunk Poof
Pop Purr Quack Rattle
Roar Rumble Rustle Screech

Snip Snort Splash Squelch
Squish Swoosh Thud Thump
Ticktock Tinkle Tsk Twang
Tweet Ugh Vroom Whack
Wham Whip Whisper Whizz
Whoop Whoosh Woof Yikes
Zap Zing Zip Zoom

Examples of Onomatopoeia in Literature
I hope that after going through the table above you have understood which words make up for onomatopoeia. But what is onomatopoeia in literature? There are various nursery rhymes, poems by famous poets, and literary works that stand as renowned examples of onomatopoeia in literature. And here they are.

...And who tolling, tolling, tolling,
In that muffled monotone,
Feel a glory in so rolling
On the human heart a stone... ~ Edgar Allan Poe, The Bells

...The moan of doves in immemorial elms,
And murmuring of innumerable bees. ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson, Murmuring of Innumerable Bees

The rusty spigot sputters,
utters a splutter,
spatters a smattering of drops,
gashes wider;
slash
splatters
scatters
spurts
finally stops sputtering
and splash!
gushes rushes splashes
clear water dashes.

Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full!
One for the master, one for the dame,
And one for the little boy who lives down the lane. ~ Nursery Rhyme

...My days have crackled and gone up in smoke,
Have puffed and burst as sun-starts on a stream... ~ Francis Thompson, The Hound of Heaven

It shushes
It hushes
The loudness in the road.
It flitter-twitters,
And laughs away from me.
It laughs a lovely whiteness,
And whitely whirs away,
To be
Some otherwhere,
Still white as milk or shirts,
So beautiful it hurts. ~ Gwendolyn Brooks, Cynthia in the Snow

...Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred... ~ Alfred Noyes, The Highwayman

...And ere three shrill notes the pipe uttered,
You heard as if an army muttered;
And the muttering grew to a grumbling;
And the grumbling grew to a mighty rumbling;
And out of the houses the rats came tumbling. ~ Robert Browning, The Pied Piper of Hamelin

The world of English language is filled with wondrous surprises. And that was all on what is onomatopoeia and its examples. Anytime in the future you'd like to explain yourself or a situation, perhaps these words can be some help to make it much more clear.

Emotional DNA and Generational Issues

Ever since I can remember, I had a huge fear of taxidermied animal heads. (A strange phobia, I know.) I could not go into a room with a head mounted on the wall. During my lifetime, I'd never had a negative experience with these things, so it didn't make any sense that they bothered me so much. Have you ever been upset by something that makes no logical sense? You may be carrying generational issues.

Just as we are recipients of our ancestors' physical DNA, we also carry their emotional DNA. Many times, we are upset by something and think to ourselves, "Why does that trigger me so much?" As it turns out, sometimes when we have an ancestor who went through trauma or had a particular negative belief pattern, we can inherit that emotional tendency. Then when we're presented with certain life situations, our reaction seems out of proportion to the situation.

It wasn't until I was introduced to energy clearing therapies that I realized my taxidermy fear was something I was carrying from an ancestor. (Actually, in my case, it was two separate ancestors.) I have done this ancestral clearing work intuitively for many years, and much research is now being done on this phenomenon. It is scientifically known as biogenetic decoding.

I have discovered that generational issues are very common in this work. They can be attached to a variety of different issues. Some issues that I frequently see carried in family lines are depression, addictions, abuse, and financial problems.

The good news, though, is that with Calyco Healing, it's a simple procedure to clear ancestral issues from your energy field. Since my own energy field was cleared of my phobia, I no longer have any problems with stuffed animal heads. In fact, one year I went to a family reunion at a lodge, and my mom could not believe I was spending time with my cousins in the "deer head room"!

I recently found out that another one of my cousins had that very same intense fear. She was unaware that I had energetically cleared it when she told me, "One day I walked into a place with deer heads and noticed that I wasn't afraid, and in fact, I felt totally at ease in there." That's because when doing generational work, anyone in the lineage who carries that same issue is cleared too. So by clearing generational issues, you are also helping relatives you may not even be aware of!

Balance Your Chakras with Tuning Forks

Sound therapy with tuning forks can be a simple but powerful way to work with the chakras, the major energy centers in the body. The benefits include less stress and removal of blocked energy in the body that contributes to physical illness.

The Chakras
The chakras are 7 major energy centers in the body that run along the spinal column. They extend from the base of the spine to the brain. The chakras are the control center for the flow of energy in the body and all energy coming into the body. They link the physical body to the subtle energy fields around the body that represent emotional, mental and spiritual activities. The chakras are connected to the physical body through the spinal column.

There are three primary energy channels in the body. The central energy channel, the Sushumna, runs along the spinal column. Two other channels, the Ida (female energy) and Pingala (male energy) intertwine along the Sushumna. The chakras are created where these two channels cross the Sushumna. Excesses or deficiencies in each chakra will indicate where the body is out of balance. These imbalances can manifest in the form of physical aches and pains or illness or in an emotional imbalances such as anxiety or an addiction. Although many people associate the chakras with sitting on a yoga mat, sound can be an effective way to improve the flow of energy in the body and restore the proper balance to each chakra.

How Tuning Forks Work
Quantum physics is now confirming that our bodies are not solid matter, but an orchestra of vibrational frequencies. Each cell, organ or body system has its own optimal frequency that corresponds to a health state. Illness and disease indicate that the vibrational frequency is out of balance. The specific frequencies of various sounds can change the frequency of the chakra. At a metaphysical level, aches and pains are an indication at the cellular level that the life force energy of the physical body is blocked. The power of sound can release trapped energy and make this energy available for restoring health and making life changes. Tuning forks can search out and work on blockages in the subtle energy bodies that surround the physical body and change imbalances before they manifest at the physical level.

Putting it Together
There are many types of tuning forks that use different frequencies. Some are based on the current musical scale while other are based on specific numerical sequences or energies. One example is the tuning based on the ancient Solfeggio frequencies. The Solfeggio frequencies are part of an ancient musical scale that was originally part of the Gregorian Chant. Eventually these powerful frequencies were replaced with changes in the musical scale based. These frequencies have been rediscovered and are now being used to reduce stress, increase energy flow and facilitate the body's ability to heal itself.

Each of the six frequencies correspond to one of the chakras :
1st Chakra uses the UT Fork at 396 Hz for Liberating Guilt and Fear
2nd Chakra uses the RE Fork at 417 Hz for Facilitating Change
3rd Chakra uses the MI Fork at 528 Hz for Transformation and Miracles
4th Chakra uses the FA Fork at 639 Hz for Connecting to Others
5th Chakra uses the SOL Fork at 741 Hz for Expressions and Solutions
6th Chakra uses the LA Fork at 852 Hz for Awakening Intuition
The 7th chakra is the connection to the Universe and is the sum of the previous six frequencies.

The practitioner works by having the client first lie face down on a massage table. The client hears the tone of the first tuning fork. The fork is held over each chakra to achieve balance. After the root chakra, the client hears a combination of the UT fork and the next chakra. The interval between the two forks is important. The practitioner creates an energy bridge from the root chakra to each succeeding chakra. The two forks are used to trace the intertwining energy channels up the base of the spine to the crown. The client turns over and the process is repeated, working from the crown chakra down to the root.

In summary, the chakras play an important role in balancing the energy within the body and maintaining the proper balance necessary for optimum health. Sound is an important way to restore balance to the chakras and facilitate the movement of energy throughout the body. It can be a simple but powerful technique.

Gas Pains in Stomach

Gas Pains in Stomach

The following article provides information on the symptoms, causes and remedies for gas pains in stomach. Read on...

Formation of gas when the food is being digested is a normal process of the body. However, if the gas formation is in excess, resulting in abdominal pain and other gas pain symptoms such as stomach bloating, belching, flatulence, it is something that needs to be treated immediately. Gas pains in stomach can be very discomforting, not to mention how embarrassing they can be for the sufferer. Given below are the main causes which lead up to this condition, followed by some of the best gas pains in stomach remedy.

Causes of Gas Pains in Stomach
  • One of the most common reasons behind gas pains in stomach is eating in excess or eating the wrong kind of foods. Taking lots of fatty foods in the diet or those which are rich in carbohydrates, can lead to indigestion and gas formation.
  • There are some foods which are especially known to cause gas. Some of these foods that cause gas are cauliflower, cabbage, milk, bananas, broccoli, red kidney beans, aerated drinks, etc. So, if any of these foods are consumed, they can cause excess gas production.
  • Swallowing of large amounts of air is another of the flatulence causes. If a person eats his food very fast or breathes from mouth, excess air goes inside the digestive tract, leading to gas formation.
  • Food allergies, food intolerance as well as food poisoning can all produce gas pains in stomach as a side effect.
  • Skipping meals and keeping the stomach empty for long hours are some other excessive gas causes.
  • Anxiety, stress and depression may play havoc with a person's digestive system, leading to gas and abdominal pain.
  • Gas pains in stomach during pregnancy occur due to increased production of progesterone. This hormone relaxes the gastrointestinal tract muscles, thus slowing the digestion and causing gas in the process. Find more in gas pains during pregnancy.
  • Excess gas formation can result as a side effect of taking certain medicines.
Tips on How to Get Rid of Gas Pains in Stomach

Precautions
How to get rid if gas pains? The first thing that a person should undertake for gas pain relief is to eliminate the causes behind it. Taking a balanced diet, avoiding the tendency to overeat, eliminating foods and beverages that might have lead up to this condition as well as changing one's medication if that's the reason behind it, are some of the precautionary measures one can take to avoid gas pains in stomach.

Home Remedies
There are a number of gas pain remedies which can be undertaken at home itself to get relief from it.
  • If a person takes a walk upon experiencing gas pain symptoms, it will help in releasing the gas. Another position that releases gas naturally is to kneel down and then rest your upper body on the thighs, keeping your head on the ground. Stay in this position for a while to release the gas.
  • Taking ginger tea or chamomile tea brings relief from gas pain.
  • If gas pains in stomach are due to stress, undertaking deep breathing or meditation everyday will help in treating them.
  • Drink a mixture prepared from a cup of warm water and two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar for relief from gas pain.
  • Asafoetida is known to have properties which help in better digestion. So, have it with warm water everyday as flatulence remedy.
  • Massaging the stomach gently in circular motions will help in releasing the gas.
  • Chewing celery seeds as well as fennel seeds after every meal prevents the formation of excess gas.
In most cases, gas pains in stomach get treated by taking these precautions as well as following the home remedies given here. Taking care of one's digestive health is the key to prevent excess gas formation. However, if the gas pains in stomach and chest as well as other symptoms become severe over time or are chronic, consulting a doctor for proper diagnoses and treatment is recommended.

China passenger train hits 300 mph, breaks record

China passenger train hits 300 mph, breaks record
In this photo released by China's Xinhua news agency, a China Railway High-Speed (CRH) train enters Bengbu …

BEIJING – A Chinese passenger train hit a record speed of 302 miles per hour (486 kilometers per hour) Friday during a test run of a yet-to-be opened link between Beijing and Shanghai, state media said.

The Xinhua News Agency said it was the fastest speed recorded by an unmodified conventional commercial train. Other types of trains in other countries have traveled faster.

A specially modified French TGV train reached 357.2 mph (574.8 kph) during a 2007 test, while a Japanese magnetically levitated train sped to 361 mph (581 kph) in 2003.

State television footage showed the sleek white train whipping past green farm fields in eastern China. It reached the top speed on a segment of the 824-mile (1,318-kilometer) -long line between Zaozhuang city in Shandong province and Bengbu city in Anhui province, Xinhua said.

The line is due to open in 2012 and will halve the current travel time between the capital Beijing and Shanghai to five hours.

The project costs $32.5 billion and is part of a massive government effort to link many of China's cities by high-speed rail and reduce overcrowding on heavily used lines.

China already has the world's longest high-speed rail network, and it plans to cover 8,125 miles (13,000 kilometers) by 2012 and 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) by 2020.

The drive to develop high-speed rail technology rivals China's space program in terms of national pride and importance. Railway officials say they want to reach speeds over 500 kph (312 mph).
