Rap artist Cassidy a suspect in Philadelphia murder

Rap artist Cassidy a suspect in Philadelphia murder

Hackensack Police Emergency Response Team officers arrested a Jersey City hip-hop artist and emcee Saturday afternoon in Hackensack on a “high risk” warrant from Philadelphia where he is a suspect in a murder and two attempted murders

Rapper Cassidy, whose real name is, Barry Reese, was considered “armed and dangerous,” is also wanted on a probation violation charge in Philadelphia. As the rapper shopped in a local convenience store, an undercover officer entered to identify him. Once the officers were positive the man was Reese, ERT officers conducted a felony motor vehicle stop once the rapper left the store, said Hackensack police Lt. Timothy Lloyd, and took him into custody without incident, NorthJersey.com reported.

The paper reported that the music artist was surprised by his arrest, but no one was injured during the course of the arrest and that the arresting officers did an outstanding job, said Lloyd.

Philadelphia Police warrant squad contacted Hackensack Police Saturday morning informing the department of their warrant for the 28-year-old's arrest. They knew from a previous arrest that he lived in Hackensack, so the ERT team was called in along with the Hackensack police department’s Juvenile Bureau to surveil Reese’s Reilly Court home, 24HourHipHop.com reported.

This is not the 28-year-old Pennsylvania native's first brush with the law. In April 2005, Reese and three men armed with an AK-47 variant rifle, 9 mm and .45 and .40 caliber handguns opened fire on three unarmed men in a Northwest Philadelphia neighborhood killing one and injuring two, reported MTV.

Philadelphia police charged the rapper with murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, conspiracy and weapons possession. Reese later stood trial on third degree murder, attempted murder and weapons charges after the prosecutions star witness recanted his confession.

On January 25, 2006, the Gangster rap artist was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime. According to MTV News, he was sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison with credit for the seven months he served while awaiting trial, and probation. After serving eight months, Reese was released from Pennsylvania's Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on March 2, 2006.

Seven months after his release from prison, Reese was seriously injured when a commercial truck slammed into an SUV he was riding in. He awoke from a medically induced coma eight days later at the Jersey City Medical Center, with a fractured skull and several broken bones to the left side of his face, MTV News reported. He recovered and released his third album, “B.A.R.S. The Barry Adrian Reese Story,” in 2007.

According to Billboard.com, the album debuted at #10 top 200, selling 63,000 copies within the first week. The album features songs about his accident and his prison stint, as well as his relationship with God. His well known single from his 2005 “I’m a Hustla” album, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

Reese is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail Annex awaiting extradition back to Philadelphia.

Latency Period of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer arising from asbestos fibers inhaled or ingested into the body and trapped in the mesothelial linings of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), and heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

Pleural mesothelioma is most common, occurring in 75 percent of cases, with peritoneal mesothelioma occurring in about 15+ percent of cases, and pericardial mesothelioma occurring in less than 10 percent.

Mesotheliomas affect thousands of people each year. Mesothelioma was not tracked as a cause of death by federal health officials until 1999, but numbers from that year show an estimated death rate of 2,343 individuals out of a population of about 273 million, based on new reporting. Projecting a rate of increase (from 1990 to 1999) over the subsequent decade, from 2000 to 2010, experts estimate 35,000 yearly deaths from mesothelioma in the long term. More on mesothelioma statistics.

Mesothelioma, in all forms, has an extremely long latency period compared to other cancers. This latency period is generally thought to range from 5 years to 40 years, with a 2007 study from Italy showing an latency period of 43 years for those exposed through their work, and 48 for those who suffered environmental and household exposure.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, concurs, noting that mesothelioma has a much longer latency compared to other lung cancers, or 40 years as compared to an average 15 to 20 years.

So does the state of Arizona, noting on its web pages that symptoms of asbestos-related disease like mesothelioma do not usually appear until about 10 to 40 years after first exposure, and adds the caveat that children present an exception to this long latency rule due to their rapid rate of growth.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, the premier national agency for health effects from hazardous chemical exposures (of which asbestos is one), shows the latency period as being between 15-30 years, and adds that asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma. The Minnesota Department of Health agrees, noting that all asbestos diseases have a latency period, and that that period is generally between 10 and 40 years.

Experts estimate that more than 28 million Americans have been exposed to asbestos, either through their work, the environment, use of products like ironing board covers and oven gloves (to name a few), or through a family member who brought asbestos fibers home on clothing. A 2004 OSHA report says 1.3 million people are exposed to asbestos through their work.

Mesothelioma symptoms tend to mimic other diseases or illnesses, and mesothelioma is usually isolated as the cause a mere two to three months before a tumor is found, which leads to poor prognoses. The average survival time for people diagnosed with mesothelioma is about 1 to 2 years and mesothelioma is almost always fatal, though scientists and researchers expect, with a new test available to detect mesothelioma, survival rates may improve in the future.

Asbestos itself occurs naturally in six different forms: amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and the fibrous varieties of tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite (the latter three also occurring naturally in non-fibrous forms). Widely used during most of the last century in various building materials and automotive products, to name a few, the mineral is further classified into friable and non-friable forms.

The first category, and the most dangerous (since it readily releases fibers when broken), includes anything containing more than one percent of asbestos (a limit established in 1989 by the EPA for all domestic product); product that, when dry, can be crumbled by mere hand pressure, and; substances like drywall, blown-in insulation, boiler pipe wrapping, and (acoustical) ceiling tiles or insulative and sound-proofing textured ceilings.

Top 5 Occupations at Risk for Exposure to Asbestos

Asbestos exposure is the number one risk factor for Mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos is a substance that consists of magnesium-silicate mineral fibers. The military, builders, and contractors used the products made from this substance, for many years. It was used because of its low heat conductivity and resistance to flame and heat. Scientists have linked exposure to asbestos to Mesothelioma and many other lung ailments.

Occupational Locations Prone to Exposure of Asbestos

According to the E.P.A. (US Environmental Protection Agency), many buildings in the U.S. have asbestos insulation in them. Exposure to asbestos occurs in many places. Some occupations are at higher risk then others when it comes to exposure to asbestos such as:

  • Mines
  • Factories
  • Shipyards
  • Construction sites
  • Railroads
  • Insulation manufacturers
  • Gas mask manufacturers

Top 5 Occupations at risk of asbestos exposure

The top 5 occupations that are at risk for exposure to asbestos are:

  1. Miners
  2. Factory workers
  3. Railroad workers
  4. Ship builders
  5. Construction workers

Even family members of these workers are in danger of receiving second hand exposure to asbestos because of the dust and fibers that were brought into the home by workers on their clothes.

The Consequences Exposure to Asbestos

Workers that have been exposed to asbestos may develop Mesothelioma cancer. Most people in these industries where exposed to asbestos on a daily basis. They were not informed of the dangers of asbestos exposure.

Other Occupations with Increased Risk of Asbestos Exposure

Other industries and occupations that are known for exposure to asbestos include but are not limited to:

  • Insulation installers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Pipe fitters
  • Welders
  • Power plant workers
  • Chemical plant workers
  • Boilermakers
  • Auto mechanics

Advice for Those Exposed to Asbestos

If you or someone you know share any of these risk factors you should let your doctor know and receive regular screenings, the sooner it is detected the better it is for its’ victims.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a disease that is caused due to exposure to Asbestos. Symptoms are hard to identify as they can seem to be a simple contraction of the common cold 30 to 50 years after your exposure to asbestos. Yes, that’s right, imagine being exposed to Asbestos when you were 20 and getting Mesothelioma cancer when you are 50. You spent your youth working in an industry giving your hard work and as compensation you get Mesothelioma Cancer because of your employer’s negligence.

Any worker or a friend of family member of a worker having worked in an Asbestos environment should ensure that they get themselves checked for Mesothelioma cancer when they seem to fall ill without a reason.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma are similar to that of Tuberculosis and Asthma to a large extent. Some victims may have mild symptoms before suddenly developing the Mesothelioma cancer.

Symptoms of Meosthelioma include:

A change in cough pattern or persistent cough

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden pain in chest or Abdomen
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of Weight

A doctor’s diagnosis will be tough unless the doctor is aware of your history. Mesothelioma cancer is rare, except for incidences in the Asbestos industry so make sure any symptoms of illness are presented to the doctor with your history.

Anyone who has been exposed to Asbestos may develop these symptoms and would be due legal compensation due to employer’s negligence so be prepared, get complete knowledge of the disease.

Mesothelioma Risk Factors and Second Hand Asbestos Exposure

Mesothelioma risk factors are anything that increases a person’s chance of getting a disease. Asbestos exposure is the main risk factor for developing mesothelioma. Individuals who have been exposed to asbestos for a long time on the job are more likely to get asbestos cancer than those who have not been exposed to asbestos. Various studies have reported that more than 85 percent of mesothelioma cases are linked to asbestos exposure.

High Risk Asbestos Exposure Job Sites include:

  • Construction Workers
  • Auto mechanics
  • Building Engineers
  • Railroad Workers
  • Shipyard Workers and Navy Sailors
  • Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) workers

Family Members and Second Hand Asbestos Exposure Risk Factors

Studies have shown that family members are also at risk for asbestos exposure due to second hand exposure. Asbestos workers can carry the asbestos fibers on their hair, shoes and clothing which can put the family at serious risk of being exposed to asbestos particles and developing mesothelioma cancer.

Asbestos Exposure in Commercial Products

Asbestos and asbestos materials where used in many commercial products in the past. Many workers in various industries where asbestos exposure was a risk came in contact with the deadly material on a daily bases and for long hours every day. These workers did not know that their lives were at risk. Some of the commercial products that these workers handled were; brake pads, roofing, insulation, door gaskets, floor tiles plus many others.

Second Hand Asbestos Exposure Putting Women at Risk for Mesothelioma

Number of women suffering from mesothelioma is still lower than men. The highest cases of mesothelioma are found in men who were exposed to asbestos at work, according to studies. Because of this finding, it is safe to say that most of the women who have developed mesothelioma cancer came in contact with asbestos through asbestos fibers brought home on their spouses clothing and hair or from products within the home.

What Individuals should do if Exposed to Asbestos

If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos, you must seek immediate diagnosis. Symptoms may not show up for a very long time. It could take as long as 12 to 30 years before you see some signs or symptoms, but these symptoms are often misdiagnosed as other illnesses. Let your physician know that you were exposed to asbestos so that you can get a proper diagnosis. If diagnosed with mesothelioma, get the best medical treatment and legal help to ensure a comfortable life.
