'Gossip Girl' EP: Elizabeth Hurley's character like Heather Locklear on 'Melrose Place'

'Gossip Girl' EP: Elizabeth Hurley's character like Heather Locklear on 'Melrose Place'

When Elizabeth Hurley joins "Gossip Girl," her character of Diana Payne may seem awfully familiar.

Executive producer Josh Safran suggested that Hurley, who plays a power-hungry media mogul, will remind people Amanda Woodward, Heather Locklear's character from "Melrose Place."

"When she says something, even though she may move the chess pieces around to get what she wants, she says up top 'This is what I want'," Safran says. "So if people don't comply, she'll move them to get what she wants."

Safran added he was ecstatic for Hurley to join the cast and she was his first choice for the role.

"She was our wish list. It sounds terrible, but when we saw that 'Wonder Woman' (a pilot Hurley had worked on) wasn't going forward, I was like oooh! Which is horrible because you want to like be very happy for other people's successes, but we just wanted her too badly," Safran says.

Hurley, like most of the cast, starts the season in Los Angeles. But when the crew slowly migrates back to their comfort zone of Manhattan, she'll be joining, Safran says.

Will you?

"Gossip Girl" returns to The CW on Monday (Sept. 26) at 8 p.m. ET.

Texas Tech president Guy Bailey gives insight into Thursday's Big 12 conference call

Texas Tech president Guy Bailey talked Friday morning about Thursday's Big 12 presidents with Chris Level and Aaron Dickens of Lubbock radio show 'Tech Talk' on Double T 104.3 FM.

Bailey's comments were subsequently transcribed and published on RedRaiderSports.com, Texas Tech's Rivals.com affiliate website.

While the decision to relieve Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe stole Thursday headlines, the most important topic was discussing handing over media rights to the conference for a six-year period until the current ABC/ESPN contract expires.

"What that means is if you assign your rights to the conference and you leave, you leave your rights," Bailey told Level and Dickens. "There's a real incentive not to leave. We talked about assigning our rights to the conference for six years which is the period of the ABC/ESPN contract. Most of us have to go to our governing boards to get approval for that, but if that were to happen I think it would be the single most stabilizing factor for the conference."

Bailey suspects after the six-year period is up ABC and ESPN will insist the Big 12 teams hand over media rights for an additional period of time.

"I'm sure at that point ABC/ESPN would want us to assign our rights to the conference," Bailey said. "I'm sure they would probably demand it. They can't very easily do a contract with a conference that is not stable."

LSU football: Keys to victory against West Virginia

LSU football: Keys to victory against West Virginia
LSU football team's keys to victory today against West Virginia. The Mountaineers host the Tigers in LSU's Top 25 matchup in four games.

Tackle in space

West Virginia is LSU's third Spread-offense opponent this month, but different than Oregon and Mississippi State. The Mountaineers like to throw the ball around to many receivers and in all manner of routes. They won't go deep unless invited to. LSU defensive backs must tackle well in space and run to the ball in case the first defender misses. Expect to see defensive linemen and linebackers chasing down plays from the backside, because the field will be spread out. Mountaineers receivers and running backs aren't big, which makes them a little harder to pin down. LSU has to be careful not to overpursue on the pass rush because Geno Smith is a much better runner than Mississippi State's Chris Relf. The Tigers did a good job last season holding Smith to 119 yards passing on 14 completions, but the offense is a little different under first-year coach Dana Holgorsen. He may have some gadget plays to even the talent disadvantage.

Hammer the ball

West Virginia is less physical than Mississippi State because of a smaller defensive line, but the 3-3-5 Stack creates a different look that could cause some problems for the LSU line. The Tigers will probably work their physical running game and try to wear the Mountaineers down just as they did against Mississippi State last week, with Spencer Ware and Michael Ford pounding between the tackles out of two-tight end sets. LSU scored only one offensive touchdown last season against West Virginia but does have the tape to work from and an experienced line. Greg Shaw might get the start at left tackle if Chris Faulk can't go, and the line might struggle with the continuity. Constantly hitting the Mountaineers with the run will set up some passing opportunities later in the game, which worked quite well last week.

The return of Russell Shepard from a three-game suspension gives LSU an outside threat it hasn't had.

Get Russell Shepard involved

He's LSU's not-so-secret-weapon. Although he hasn't played, West Virginia will be ready for him based on last year's offense. Shepard gives LSU an outside threat it hasn't had. Expect Shepard to run some speed sweeps, and many of those bubble screens that have been going to Odell Beckham III will be going to Shepard. We are told Shepard is much improved, stronger, and it's about time for him to start living up to his promise. He has had more than two years to learn how to be a wide receiver but the point is to get the ball in his hands whatever way possible. His strengths are his moves, quickness and speed, which should make him dangerous in one-on-one situations. It's good that Miles wants to put him in the return game to give him another place to get touches. He'll probably be in on kickoff returns but not punts.

Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) First Eliminated From Dancing With The Stars

Ron Artest became the first competitor – and more importantly the first athlete – eliminated from Dancing With The Stars this season. The DWTS producers toyed with America when Artest and Nancy Grace were the final two people remaining. Of course, America’s housewives decided to keep Nancy Grace. Damn you middle America.

Only Hope Solo and Kristen Cavallari remain from our corner of the blogosphere. Though it looks like Hope will be OK.

Wish You Were Here Lyrics and Video

Wish You Were Here Lyrics

I can be tough, I can be strong, But with you, It’s not like that at all

Theres a girl, who gives a shit, Behind this wall, You just walk through it

[refrain]
And I remember all those crazy thing you said
You left them running through my head
You’re always there, you’re everywhere
But right now I wish you were here

All those crazy things we did
Didn’t think about it just went with it
You’re always there, you’re everywhere
But right now I wish you were here

[chorus]
Damn, Damn, Damn
What I’d do to have you Here, Here, Here
I wish you were here

Damn, Damn, Damn
What I’d do to have you Near, Near, Near
I wish you were here.

I love, the way you are, It’s who I am, don’t have to try hard
We always say, Say like it is, And the truth, is that I really miss

[refrain]
All those crazy thing you said
You left them running through my head
You’re always there, you’re everywhere
But right now I wish you were here

All those crazy things we did
Didn’t think about it just went with it
You’re always there, you’re everywhere
But right now I wish you were here

[chorus]
Damn, Damn, Damn,
What I’d do to have you Here, Here, Here
I wish you were here

Damn, Damn, Damn
What I’d do to have you Near, Near, Near
I wish you were here.

[bridge]
No, I don’t wanna let go, I just wanna let you know
That I never wanna let go, Let go, Oh, Oh,

No, I don’t wanna let go, I just wanna let you know
That I never wanna let go, Let go, Let go, Let go…

[chorus]
Damn, Damn, Damn
What I’d do to have you Here, Here, Here
I wish you were here

Damn, Damn, Damn
What I’d do to have you Near, Near, Near
I wish you were here.

Fashion’s Night Out events across South Florida

Fashion’s Night Out arrives Thursday, with events geared to promote the industry and spur the economy.

By Ina Paiva Cordle

icordle@MiamiHerald.com

Get ready for the world’s largest celebration of fashion Thursday evening, when stores and malls across South Florida offer special promotions, runway shows, musical performances, designer and celebrity guest appearances, food and other festivities.

Fashion’s Night Out, in its third year, is promising its biggest party yet, geared to promote the fashion industry and give shoppers a reason to spend money, have fun and enjoy the newest looks for the fall season — while sipping a cocktail, of course.

“The idea is to create experiences that bring people to fashion in a different way than they have before,” said Susan Portnoy, New York-based spokeswoman for Fashion’s Night Out.

Conceived by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the event started in 2009 in New York as a way to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence and boost the industry’s economy during the recession. It has since grown to include stores in more than 250 U.S. cities and 18 countries, including Brazil, China and Japan, Portnoy said.

For the first time, online retailers have joined in the celebration, allowing shoppers to enjoy special promotions at more than 200 e-commerce sites.

Also this year, Miami has become a special host city for Fashion’s Night Out, joining a list of fashion capitals like Milan, Paris, New York and London, said Pamela Fuertes, vice president of international economic development for the Beacon Council, Miami-Dade’s economic development agency.

“We’re excited, because it is great to have Miami on the roster of official host cities,” Fuertes said. “It draws attention to the existing fashion industry and retail industry that is here, and for us that is a huge opportunity. We’re working very hard at branding and promoting the county as a fashion hub for companies.”

South Florida retailers will be in on the action, from luxury boutiques in the Miami Design District and Bal Harbour Shops to department stores in Aventura Mall and the Village of Merrick Park, and lots of other stores, in between.

“Shopping is fun,” said Fashion Night Out’s Portnoy. “And we want people who have the disposable income to come out and certainly spend what makes sense for their budget.”

Gossip And Innuendo Are The Name Of The Game On 'Drop Dead Diva'

Gossip And Innuendo Are The Name Of The Game On 'Drop Dead Diva'

It seems like gossip and innuendo are the name of the game in Drop Dead Diva. The episode opens in Jane’s apartment with her and Stacy preparing breakfast and chatting before work. Jane dishes with Stacy about her successful date with judge French. She tells Stacy she really enjoyed her date with the judge and gives her all the romantic details and tells Stacy she hopes he’ll call again. Stacy interrupts her and confesses her guilt for kissing her co-star Bryan and her attraction to him and doesn’t know how or what to tell Fred. Jane tells Stacy not to hurt Fred and tell him the truth as soon as possible. Then Jane asks Stacy who she wants to be with Fred or Bryan and Stacy says she doesn’t know.

Meanwhile, Kim ends up in a place she never thought she would a church. The priest there has called her for help in defending the church’s pastor Ben Logan.

It seems Mr. Logan is a single father and widower who’s charged with the criminal offense of a civil demand by discount chain One Stop for telling his parishioners to take what they need to survive and says one stop needs to meet their charitable needs to the community Kim asks him if that means he’s telling the parishoner’s to steal and condones it . Ben says yes. Kim says although she can sympathize and understand where he’s coming from, it’s a crime. However, Kim seems taken with him and he with her and she says she will speak to the store on his behalf and find out what’s going on? Meanwhile back at Harrison and Parker it seems like a storm is brewing and Parker is in the middle of it.

Back at the office, Parker is racing around removing any heavy or blunt shaped objects from his office as one of his exes by the name of Elisa played by pop star Brandi says she wants to come by and speak to him. Parker convinced she either wants to get back together or tear him apart either way she wants a piece of him and he wants no part in it. Parker commissions Jane as his second in command accompanying him for the meeting. Parker says if Jane helps him he’ll owe her big time and she holds him to that.

Jane and Parker meet with Elisa who tells them that she has an insurance case she would like them to take. She wants to sue an insurance company for denying her, her father’s life insurance policy. Parker quickly tells Elisa he’s sorry but can’t take the case but when Parker leaves Jane defies him once again, and says that she is taking the case whether he likes it or not because he said he owed her one. So he, desists in putting up a fight.

Later, Parker visits Kim in her office believing that the feelings between them have been reignited and the their relationship renewed. However, Kim surprises Parker and tells him it’s not so she doesn’t want their relationship to be exclusive, he’s free to see other people and so is she. Parker says he doesn’t want it that way and Kim says take it or leave it. It seems like everyone is being surprised in the romance department when Jane goes to meet Owen in his chambers for lunch and gets a surprise of her own.

When Jane arrives at Owen’s chambers ready for a quiet romantic lunch, she’s shocked to find a party in the room with Owen surrounded by friends and all his friends ask Jane if she is a F.O.O. (friend of Owen’s). Jane doesn’t let that distract her from her case and goes to visit Elisa about her case.

When Jane arrives at Elisa’s apartment to get her signature on some documents she discovers Elisa has been keeping a secret of her own. It seems Elisa has a seven year old son, who was coincidentally born a year after Elissa and Parker broke up. Jane puts two and two together and realizes Parker is the father but knows it’s not her place to say anything. Meanwhile it seems an office romance is brewing for Kim when she organizes a dinner there with her client Ben Logan.

In her office, while discussing the case and how to defend and approach it, Kim and Ben grow closer ending the night with a kiss.

Jane hopes her second attempt at a romantic date with Owen is in the cards but realizes it’s not when Owen’s social butterfly skills go into overdrive and he recognizes people in the restaurant and calls them over to join the pair for dinner alienating Jane.

Meanwhile as Jane is trying Elisa’s case, the insurance company accuses Elisa who is a nurse of acquiring and overmedicating her father taking advantage of her position as a nurse and threatens to report her and trying to blackmail her into dropping the suit against them or she’ll surely lose her license. Later Jane is put in the middle of her friends drama once again back at the office.

Jane learns Fred knew about Stacy’s Kiss with Bryan all along when he informs Jane he caught them kissing in the hall when he was waiting to surprise Stacy. Jane tells Fred he needs to stand up for himself and tell Stacy that he knows and how he feels as soon as possible. Fred agrees and wastes no time. He barges on to the set of Stacy’s drama but it might be too late when he hears her accept a date with Bryan. Fred doesn’t back down confronting Stacy telling her she needs to decide who and what she wants. If she can’t make up her mind he doesn’t want to be with her. Stacy is mad as well at Jane this time.

Stacy goes to see Jane and reems her out for revealing her secret to Fred. Jane said she didn’t have to reveal anything because Fred told her he saw Stacy with his own eyes. Jane can’t worry about Stacy because she’s busy with her case and recruits Grayson for help. She wants to see if the pair can dig up dirt on the insurance company and use that against them for leverage. Grayson comes through and finds the dirt that Jane is looking for. He learns that the insurance company withheld Elisa’s policy while cashing an indentical policy to her father’s employer and they’ve done the same to other policy holders as well. The company up against the wall and offers Elisa a deal they will settle if she doesn’t reveal what she learned. Elisa refuses to hide the injustice but rather expose so her father’s co-workers won’t suffer the same fate. In the end it seems like a lose, lose situation as Elisa wins the lawsuit and the insurance money but loses her job and the insurance company is exposed and in hot water.

Later Kim is called down to the police station after Ben’s daughter is arrested for shoplifting. The police tell Kim and Ben she stole over $1,000 worth of goods. Ben’s daughter says she stole because her father told the congregation to take what they want and need and she wanted a cd player and other electronics so she could look cool to her friends and was tired of not having things because they are poor. Ben realizes he taught his daughter and the congregation the wrong lesson. Later as Ben’s hearing approaches he doesn’t show up for court and a warrant is put out for his arrest but Kim thinks she knows where to find him. She goes to his church and finds him preaching to the congregation about the consequences and karma in stealing. Kim manages to get Ben out of jail but then sends him on his way telling him her feelings for Parker are stronger and she wants to have a relationship with him.

Parker feeling sorry for the way he treated Elisa tries to make amends by offering her a temp job at the firm unaware that he’s the father of her son. Jane returns home to find out that Fred has moved out and that Stacy still hasn’t decided how she feels about either man but prepares for her date with Bryan hoping to figure it out. Meanwhile at the bar, Grayson and Teri tag team Fred and try to cheer him up with a drink.

Finally, the episode ends with Jane’s third date with Owen and although she hopes the third time’s the charm, she’s not very hopeful. However, she is pleasantly surprised when she enters the restaurant and find it empty and it’s only occupants are her and Owen who has set up a romantic dinner for two. Jane finally has Owen all to herself, but will she be able to keep it that way. Tune in next week to find out.

Alistair Overeem: ‘You Can Call Him the Belt Collector’

Alistair Overeem: ‘You Can Call Him the Belt Collector’

It may have been one of the biggest fight announcements in UFC history when the news broke that former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem would be facing former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar on Dec. 30 at UFC 141.

Overeem’s arrival in the UFC is not unexpected, but still a huge signing as the K-1 Grand Prix champion finally makes his Octagon debut.

Originally, Overeem was cut from Strikeforce due to contractual issues between his management at Team Golden Glory and the bosses at Zuffa. Cooler heads ultimately prevailed and, according to Golden Glory leader Bas Boon, once the talks began the deal worked out without much of a problem.

“It took patience and negotiating in good faith. I must admit that it went more smoothly then I expected,” Boon told MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday. “We at Golden Glory are excited and Alistair Overeem has finally got his chance to become the UFC champion.”

Now that all the paperwork is signed and Overeem is officially a UFC fighter the next business at hand becomes the preparation for his showdown with Lesnar later this year.

The bout will be a five-round main event fight with a shot at the UFC heavyweight title on the line. Expectations are already lofty for what this fight could mean to the heavyweight division, and Boon is expecting even bigger things.

“Alistair Overeem against Brock Lesnar will be fireworks and it will be the best PPV fight in the history of the UFC,” he predicted.

The fight between Overeem and Lesnar will be a big fight undoubtedly, but the former Strikeforce champion has said in several interviews that he was actually offered a shot at the UFC heavyweight title on day one, but he didn’t want to delay his debut and chose to fight Lesnar instead.

The decision could be risky, but Overeem’s longtime trainer Martijn De Jong from Team Golden Glory says it’s just the first step before he claims the UFC heavyweight title as his own.

“Alistair fights anybody on any day. We were not disappointed at all that we didn’t get a title fight right away,” De Jong said. “When the time is right, he will get that title shot and he will take that belt. You can call him the belt collector.”

If Overeem is able to win the UFC heavyweight title he will add that to his current stable o gold which includes the K-1 Grand Prix title, the Strikeforce heavyweight title, and Dream heavyweight belt.

To prepare for Lesnar, Overeem is currently putting together his training camp and will travel home to Holland soon to begin the construction. Overeem had mentioned training in Los Angeles, and his manager Bas Boon revealed to MMAWeekly.com that plans are in place for Golden Glory to host a team in California.

“We are opening a Golden Glory camp in California,” he stated.

De Jong says it doesn’t really matter where Overeem trains at, they will make sure he has the best coaching and training partners he needs to get ready for his showdown with Lesnar.

“Alistair will be training with all the guys from Team Golden Glory with potentially flying in some heavyweight wrestlers for our camp as well,” said De Jong. “We can set up a camp anywhere in the world: Holland, Thailand, or the U.S. We will discuss this with the team as soon as he comes back to Holland.”

The addition of heavyweight wrestlers will answer some of the questions surrounding Overeem dealing with Lesnar’s tremendous grappling pedigree as a former NCAA champion.

But his trainer believes that Overeem already possesses the skills to beat Lesnar at his own game, and if he thinks that it’s going to be good to get the Dutch wrecking machine to the ground, he’s got another thing coming.

“Alistair is a very well rounded fighter. He is not only a good striker, but also holds a great submission and wrestling game. He was the former ADCC European Champion. Besides that, I can’t even remember when he got taken down in one of his fights?” De Jong stated.

“However, we will have a game plan ready for Brock and I can personally tell you that this is going to be an amazing fight; 2011 will go out with a bang!”

Overeem will travel home soon and then begin his preparation for Brock Lesnar and his UFC debut to close out the year at UFC 141 on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas.

Nancy Dell: Sensa, lowering cholesterol

1. I hear the ads for Sensa. what is it and does it work?
Evie in Springfield

Sensa is product with the texture of sugar and you sprinkle it on your food. The developers claim it stimulates your smell and taste receptors to tell your brain to tell you to stop eating.

It is basically made up of 5 simple ingredients and the founder Dr. Alan Hirsch has published several studies showing how users lose more weight than non-user.

However, these studies have never been accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. So the quality of the studies is questionable. Until there is published research showing that Sensa is effective, it may be a waste of your money.

What about a product called HCG? Does it help?

HCG is a hormone produced in pregnancy. Again there is no peer -reviewed published studies plus the manufacturers recommend a 500 calorie diet - that is just too low to get all the nutritents you need for good health.

2. What is more effective to lower my cholesterol - cutting saturated fat or eating soy?
Tony in Agawam

One in six American have high cholesterol. The best way to lower it probably varies with each person's genetics but a new study shows adding cholesterol-lowering foods can be more effective than reducing saturated fat.

The study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association placed 345 people with high cholesterol and triglycerides on a low-saturated fat diet or a diet that contained cholesterol-lowering foods plus counseling sessions.

After six months, the people who received counseling on cholesterol-lowering foods saw more than a 13 percent drop in cholesterol.

The low-saturated fats group saw only a 3 percent drop. The researcher felt the counseling sessions were needed so people could learn how to add the cholesterol lowering foods such as soy milk and meat substitutes, legumes like kidney beans, lentils, chick peas and black-eyed peas, as well as barley, oatmeal, and nuts.

Buddy Holly day in L.A.

Today would have been the 75th birthday of the rock and roll pioneer who died at 22 in the 1959 plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson. At 11:30 a.m. outside the Capitol Records building, Holly's widow Maria Elena Holly will accept his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Musicians Phil Everly and Peter Asher and actor Gary Busey, who starred in the 1978 film "The Buddy Holly Story," are scheduled to speak. Later tonight, a concert at The Music Box with Asher, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Graham Nash and others performing will be filmed for a PBS special airing in December. Asher produced Listen to Me: Buddy Holly, an album released Tuesday of favorite Buddy Holly songs performed by Nicks, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Jeff Lynne, Jackson Browne, Chris Isaak, Natalie Merchant, Zooey Deschanel and others. Randy Lewis in the L.A. Times discusses the album.

The day is a pretty big deal in Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas, where a local fan gets credit for doing the heavy lifting on the Walk of Fame star. If you have no idea how Buddy Holly shaped the music you listen to, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will help you out:

Buddy Holly played rock and roll for only two short years, but the wealth of material he recorded in that time made a major and lasting impact on popular music. Holly was an innovator who wrote his own material and was among the first to exploit such advanced studio techniques as double-tracking. He pioneered and popularized the now-standard rock-band lineup of two guitars, bass and drums.

The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, among others, have all credited Holly as an inspiration for their music.
