Sad news, Marco Simoncelli dies after MotoGP crash in Sepang

Sad news, Marco Simoncelli dies after MotoGP crash in Sepang

When i see the news, i'm sad when i heard Marco Simoncelli was die after the accident in Sepang Malaysia, by the way this is the news i found from BBC Sport :

The race was stopped on lap two when Simoncelli's bike veered across the track at turn 11 into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.
The 24-year-old had his helmet knocked off and was hit by both other riders.
American rider Edwards also fell and dislocated his shoulder - while Simoncelli's fellow Italian Rossi was able to return to the pits.
Simoncelli lay motionless on the track after the impact, while the race was immediately red-flagged.
Medical director Michele Macchiagodena said Simoncelli suffered a "very serious trauma to the head, to the neck and the chest".
At first officials were looking to restart the race before the extent of Simoncelli's injuries became clear.
The race was cancelled amid confusion in the grandstand, with fans throwing bottles to show their initial displeasure.
The death is the first fatality in MotoGP since Japan's Daijiro Katoh died from injuries sustained at the 2003 Japanese GP while, last year, Japan's Shoya Tomizawa died in a similar crash to Simoncelli in a Moto2 race in San Marino.
Simoncelli's death comes a week after British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon was killed in Las Vegas following a 15-car crash.
BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts said: "Marco lost his helmet in the crash. The officials said that, when the track medics got to him, he was in cardiac arrest. They tried to resuscitate him in the ambulance and the medical centre.
"Both riders collided with him and the impact corresponded to him losing his helmet. The saddest thing is that Valentino [Rossi] and Marco were very close friends.
"Colin [Edwards] has a dislocated shoulder and is in a lot of pain. He and Valentino are absolutely devastated."
A MotoGP statement read: "On Sunday, 23 October, during the MotoGP race at the Sepang International Circuit, San Carlo Honda Gresini's Italian rider Marco Simoncelli suffered a serious accident wherein he sustained critical injuries.
"The race was stopped immediately with the red flag and Simoncelli was transported by ambulance to the circuit medical centre where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.
"Despite their efforts, Marco sadly succumbed to his injuries at 4.56pm local time [0956 BST].
"Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Marco's family, friends and team at this tragic loss."
And Sepang circuit chairman Mokhzani Mahathir added: "This is a one-of-a-kind freak incident where the helmet came off and I am sure FIM [International Federation of Motorcycling] and MotoGP will be looking into this."
Honda rider Simoncelli entered MotoGP for the 2010 season and won his first pole position at the Catalunya race in June this year.
Simoncelli's first podium finish came in the Czech Republic in August when he finished third but he bettered that with a second-place finish at the Australian GP.
World champion Casey Stoner said: "As soon as I saw the footage it just makes you sick inside. Whenever the helmet comes off that's not a good sign."
British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow tweeted: "RIP Marco Simoncelli! A great rider and all round nice guy. My thoughts are with all his family & friends. I will never forget today."
Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber tweeted: "RIP Marco. A special talent that will be missed. Thinking of your loved ones and all the MotoGP paddock."
Major Italian sports events on Sunday observed a minute's silence in memory of Simoncelli, who was a big fan of football club AC Milan.
In their Serie A fixture against Lecce, Milan wore black armbands and came back from three goals behind to win 4-3.

Rap artist Cassidy a suspect in Philadelphia murder

Rap artist Cassidy a suspect in Philadelphia murder

Hackensack Police Emergency Response Team officers arrested a Jersey City hip-hop artist and emcee Saturday afternoon in Hackensack on a “high risk” warrant from Philadelphia where he is a suspect in a murder and two attempted murders

Rapper Cassidy, whose real name is, Barry Reese, was considered “armed and dangerous,” is also wanted on a probation violation charge in Philadelphia. As the rapper shopped in a local convenience store, an undercover officer entered to identify him. Once the officers were positive the man was Reese, ERT officers conducted a felony motor vehicle stop once the rapper left the store, said Hackensack police Lt. Timothy Lloyd, and took him into custody without incident, NorthJersey.com reported.

The paper reported that the music artist was surprised by his arrest, but no one was injured during the course of the arrest and that the arresting officers did an outstanding job, said Lloyd.

Philadelphia Police warrant squad contacted Hackensack Police Saturday morning informing the department of their warrant for the 28-year-old's arrest. They knew from a previous arrest that he lived in Hackensack, so the ERT team was called in along with the Hackensack police department’s Juvenile Bureau to surveil Reese’s Reilly Court home, 24HourHipHop.com reported.

This is not the 28-year-old Pennsylvania native's first brush with the law. In April 2005, Reese and three men armed with an AK-47 variant rifle, 9 mm and .45 and .40 caliber handguns opened fire on three unarmed men in a Northwest Philadelphia neighborhood killing one and injuring two, reported MTV.

Philadelphia police charged the rapper with murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, conspiracy and weapons possession. Reese later stood trial on third degree murder, attempted murder and weapons charges after the prosecutions star witness recanted his confession.

On January 25, 2006, the Gangster rap artist was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime. According to MTV News, he was sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison with credit for the seven months he served while awaiting trial, and probation. After serving eight months, Reese was released from Pennsylvania's Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility on March 2, 2006.

Seven months after his release from prison, Reese was seriously injured when a commercial truck slammed into an SUV he was riding in. He awoke from a medically induced coma eight days later at the Jersey City Medical Center, with a fractured skull and several broken bones to the left side of his face, MTV News reported. He recovered and released his third album, “B.A.R.S. The Barry Adrian Reese Story,” in 2007.

According to Billboard.com, the album debuted at #10 top 200, selling 63,000 copies within the first week. The album features songs about his accident and his prison stint, as well as his relationship with God. His well known single from his 2005 “I’m a Hustla” album, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

Reese is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail Annex awaiting extradition back to Philadelphia.

Source of latest Gulf oil spill determined

Source of latest Gulf oil spill determined

Just hours after a new sizable oil slick was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast, a Houston-based energy company came forward to claim responsibility for the latest round of crude tainting the area.

Anglo-Suisse Offshore Partners issued a statement last night expressing "surprise" that what it claimed was a minor leak from a well that's been out of use for some time could have produced miles-long slicks that garnered national media attention. The company has been in the process of permanently plugging the well -- located in a shallow area about 30 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La. Anglo-Suisse owned a cluster of five platforms in that area that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

According to the Times-Picayune's David Hammer, Anglo-Suisse has filed three incident reports with the Coast Guard since last Friday. In those documents, Hammer reports, the company explained that as it used a remotely operated submarine to plug the well, some oil had been discharged into the Gulf.

However, the company claimed in those reports that it had spilled less than five gallons of crude -- an amount far too small to account for the scope of the spill shown in aerial photographs. Nor would five gallons of crude square with reports of oil washing up over a 30 mile stretch of Louisiana's shoreline.

The confusion surrounding this latest Gulf spill points up a fatal flaw of America's oil pollution reporting system, which operates via a virtual honor code. Under present reporting protocols, polluters are tasked with the responsibility of turning themselves in when they're responsible for an accident -- knowing all the while that a federal inspector will probably never be dispatched to investigate.

By apparently under-reporting the scale of the spill, Anglo-Suisse may have hoped to sidestep any government oversight -- along with the hefty fines that could potentially come with it -- of the latest incident. In any event, now that the company is on the record as the responsible party, it will be on the hook for the full cleanup expenses. The one bit of good news: Anglo-Suisse also announced last night that it had successfully plugged the damaged well.

What Happened to CBS2 Reporter Serene Branson Last Night?

What Happened to CBS2 Reporter Serene Branson Last Night?
Serene Branson Speaks Gibberish at Grammys

It was the post-Grammys "flub" heard 'round the world--or at least the Twitterverse. Local CBS affiliate reporter Serene Branson was live outside the Staples Center introducing a segment on the music awards show's "highlights and backstage coverage," and within moments, her speech went awry.

While viewers of the telecast took to Twitter and Facebook to crack wise and "LOL" about Branson's garbled speech, what happened to the Emmy-nominated Los Angeles native is likely no laughing matter.

"It is feared that she may have suffered a stroke on air," reports the Daily Telegraph. Some reports indicate Branson was hospitalized, however "Branson may have merely been checked by EMT personnel and sent home with a friend, according to Kristin Cruz, co-host of the Mark & Kristin Show on KOST 103.5 in Los Angeles," notes the NY Daily News.

CBS2 has not made any statement about Branson, and what really happened remains speculation.

Accutane Side Effects Exposed

Do not treat the truth about Accutane side effects lightly. You need to protect your self before it is too late.

If you are undergoing the pain and trauma caused by the severe case of acne Vulgaris and your doctor says Accutane is the only solution; and you are ready to believe that the Accutane side effects will be nothing compared to what you are suffering now, please stop and read my article. I suffered from acne for than 13 years and I tried the full course of Accutane and caused serious and permanent damage to my knees due to it. After suffering the side effects my self and after dedicating seven years on research for permanent acne cure I believe it is my duty to tell all about the Accutane side effects.

Let Us First See a Very small Picture of Accutane Side Effects

Skin rashes
Severe and terrible headaches
A nauseating feeling
Severe ache in the stomach
Diarrhea
Chapped and dry lips
Dandruff
An itching sensation and dry skin
Dryness of the nose and bleeding from the nose
Irritation of the eyelids
Dry eyes
Blurry eye sight
Terrible mood swings
Rectal bleeding
A strange yellowness of the skin Pain in the joint and muscles
Delayed healing of wounds
Loss of hair
Severe sunburns due to extreme sensitivity to sun rays
Unable to see properly at night time
Depression and suicidal tendencies
Arthritis
Severe birth defects
Complete vision loss

Accutane side effects are a major controversial story. Till now, it is supposed to have caused 240 suicides all over the world.

Accutane due to its serious side effects should have remained a last resort drug that should not have been used unless in the severest of cases and when nothing else seemed to work. But that is not the way things are running now. Most doctors prescribe Accutane without wasting even a single thought about its side effects. Hoffmann-La Roche’s Accutane is one of the most popular acne drugs and its makes more than many millions for the company every year. Roche never properly warned its consumers about the Accutane side effects. That is the reason for so many Accutane lawsuits filed by families of Accutane users. Several Accutane users though haven’t survived to tell their stories, they committed suicide.

Congressman Bart Stupak has been trying to warn people about the serious nature of Accutane side effects – mental problems, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, birth defects and Lupus. Bart Stupak’s son committed suicide while on a course of Accutane.

Accutane is not the ultimate cure to acne. There are much better ways to permanently and completely cure acne. That too without side effects.

The anguish caused by acne is actually painful but still it does not mean that you need to suffer permanent damage in the name of a so called miracle drug that is said to cure acne. By adopting the holistic approach to acne you will be able to achieve far better results. You’ll be able to cure your acne completely and permanently and without a single side effect.

“Medium” Cancelled

“Medium” Cancelled

CBS is pulled the plug on Medium.

Attracting an average of 7.1 million viewers a week, Medium is the lowest-rated series on CBS. After all, this is the home of Two and a Half Men, TV’s most-watched sitcom. Almost all the other primetime programs on the network earn more than 10 million viewers per week.

Series star Patricia Arquette has confirmed that her days as psychic consultant Allison DuBois are numbered less than a year after NBC’s longrunning psychological thriller got the boot and moved to CBS. On Monday, Arquette confessed that the series’ current seventh season will be its last. The news hardly comes as a surprise. Speculation that the once hit show would be on the chopping block has been heating up The Watercooler ever since CBS announced in October that it was cutting back its episode order from 22 to 13. In fact, Medium only has two more episodes to film, leaving Patricia anxious to learn the fate of a character she’s grown to love.

“I was trying to get information from the writers about the last episode,” she tells Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t know what it’s going to be, but they’re really excited about it. They’re like, ‘We’re just going to burn the whole thing down!’ I’m really excited. It’s been a great time. I love that time in my life.”

Keith Olbermann gives abrupt goodbye to MSNBC show

Keith Olbermann gives abrupt goodbye to MSNBC show

NEW YORK – Keith Olbermann was MSNBC's most popular personality and single-handedly led its transformation to an outspoken, left-leaning cable news network in prime time. Despite that, he often seemed to be walking on a tightrope with his job. Friday night, it snapped.

Olbermann returned from one last commercial break on "Countdown" to tell viewers it was his last broadcast, and read a James Thurber short story in a three-minute exit statement. Simultaneously, MSNBC e-mailed a statement that "MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract." The network thanked him and said, "we wish him well in his future endeavors."

Neither MSNBC President Phil Griffin, Olbermann nor his manager responded to requests to explain an exit so abrupt that Olbermann's face was still being featured on an MSNBC promotional ad 30 minutes after he had said goodbye.

Olbermann was nearly fired in November, but instead was suspended two days without pay for violating an NBC News policy by donating to three political campaigns, including the congressional campaign of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. He returned and apologized to his fans, but not the network.

MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines insisted Olbermann's exit had nothing to do with the acquisition of parent company NBC Universal by Comcast, which received regulatory approval last week. That deal marked the exit of NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, who saw Olbermann's value in turning around a once-unprofitable network, despite headaches the mercurial personality could sometimes cause his bosses.

"There were many occasions, particularly in the last 2 1/2 years, where all that surrounded the show — but never the show itself — was just too much for me," Olbermann said in his exit statement. "But your support and loyalty and, if I may use the word, insistence, ultimately required that I keep going. My gratitude to you is boundless."

Olbermann's father, Theodore, who was often cited when his son discussed problems in the health care system, died last March. His mother died the year before.

"A lot of people are trying to figure out if this was truly voluntary or not," said Adam Green, co-founder of BoldProgressives.org, which collected thousands of petition signatures urging Olbermann's reinstatement following last fall's suspension.

After Giffords was shot in the head on Jan. 8, Olbermann took to the air with an emotional editorial that night saying politicians and talk show personalities — including himself — need to swear off any kind of violent imagery so as not to incite anybody into acts like the Giffords shooting.

Olbermann's peripatetic career landed him at MSNBC eight years ago — his second prime-time stint on the network — with a humorous show counting down the day's top stories. That changed on Aug. 30, 2006, when Olbermann aired the first of a series of densely-worded and blistering "special comments," this time expressing anger at then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's criticism of opponents to the war in Iraq.

More anti-Bush administration commentary followed. Olbermann dropped any pretense of journalistic objectivity, and he became a hero to liberals battered by the popularity of Fox News Channel and its conservative commentators. Olbermann openly feuded with Fox, often naming personalities like Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck one of his "worst persons in the world" for some of their statements.

"Countdown" became MSNBC's most popular show. Instantly, a network that had often floundered in seeking a direction molded itself after Olbermann. Opinion was in, and MSNBC's prime-time lineup was filled out with Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell, who both had been subs for Olbermann when he was away.

Olbermann, before leaving the show with a final signature toss of his script toward the camera on Friday, thanked his audience for sticking with him. As was often his habit on Friday nights, he read a Thurber short story, this one titled "Scottie Who Knew Too Much" and published in 1940.

The story's final line: "It is better to ask some of the questions than to know all of the answers."

He thanked several people, including the late Tim Russert, but pointedly not Griffin or NBC News President Steve Capus.

He said he was grateful to the network that he was given time to sign off, noting that when he left ESPN in the 1990s, he was given 30 seconds — cut in half at the last minute to get in tennis results.

David Brock, founder and CEO of the liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America, said Olbermann "led the charge" against "conservative misinformation in prime time."

"Keith is an innovator and extremely talented broadcaster who showed there was a market for progressive views on cable news," Brock said. "I'm sure we'll be hearing more of him soon, and I eagerly await hearing of his next move."

The mood was different at Newsbusters, a website operated by the conservative Media Research Center: "You guys at Newsbusters should really break out the champagne and party," wrote one reader about Olbermann.

The Cornell graduate first became known for his work on ESPN's "Sportscenter," where he also cultivated a reputation for being talented but difficult to work with. His first MSNBC stint ended in the late 1990s when he quit, complaining his bosses were telling him to talk too much about President Bill Clinton's impeachment scandal.

MSNBC announced that O'Donnell, who had frequently filled in for Olbermann before starting his own 10 p.m. show, will take over Olbermann's time slot starting Monday. "The Ed Show," with Ed Schultz, will move to 10 p.m. Cenk Uygur of the Web show "The Young Turks" will fill Schultz's vacated 6 p.m. time slot.

Olbermann's plans are unclear. He signed a four-year contract with MSNBC two years ago; contract buyouts typically include noncompete clauses that keep a personality off TV for a period of time.

CNN has continued to struggle in prime time, most recently with a program in Olbermann's time slot hosted by Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker. Bringing Olbermann on, however, would mean a dramatic shift in the network's determined nonpartisan stance, and there was no indication such a change was imminent.

Hawaii won't release Obama birth info

HONOLULU – Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie will end his quest to prove President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii because it's against state law to release private documents, his office said Friday.

State Attorney General David Louie told the governor he can't disclose an individual's birth documentation without a person's consent, Abercrombie spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said.

"There is nothing more that Gov. Abercrombie can do within the law to produce a document," said Dela Cruz. "Unfortunately, there are conspirators who will continue to question the citizenship of our president."

Abercrombie, who was a friend of Obama's parents and knew him as a child, launched an effort last month to find a way to dispel conspiracy theories that the president was born elsewhere. The governor said at the time he was bothered by people who questioned Obama's birthplace for political reasons.

But Abercrombie's investigation reached a dead end when Louie told him the law restricted his options.

Hawaii's privacy laws have long barred the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who doesn't have a tangible interest.

So-called "birthers" claim Obama is ineligible to be president because they say there's no proof he was born in the United States, with many of the skeptics questioning whether he was actually born in Kenya, his father's home country.

Hawaii's health director said in 2008 and 2009 that she had seen and verified Obama's original vital records, and birth notices in two Honolulu newspapers were published within days of Obama's birth at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu.

Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo again confirmed Friday that Obama's name is found in its alphabetical list of names of people born in Hawaii, maintained in bound copies available for public view.

That information, called index data, shows a listing for "Obama II, Barack Hussein, Male," according to the department's website. The president was born Aug. 4, 1961.

"The index is just to say who has their records within the department. That's an indication," Okubo said. "I can't talk about anyone's records."

The Obama campaign issued a certificate of live birth in 2008, an official document from the state showing the president's birth date, city and name, along with his parents' names and races.

Japan rocket ferrying supplies to space station

TOKYO – A Japanese rocket carrying supplies for the International Space Station successfully lifted off from a remote island Saturday on a mission designed to help fill a hole left by the retirement of NASA's space shuttle program.

The unmanned rocket was carrying a payload of nearly six tons of food, water, clothing and experimental equipment to the astronauts in orbit in the space station, an international project involving 15 nations. The rocket also was carrying cargo for NASA.

After docking with the ISS, dropping off its cargo and being loaded up with waste material, the rocket's transfer vehicle, named "Kounotori2," will be detached and burn itself up upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Kounotori means white stork in Japanese.

Applause broke out at the control center on Tanegashima Island as officials announced that the launch phase was a success. Tracking was switched to a center in Guam as the vehicle moved rapidly away from Japan.

Kounotori2 is expected to reach the ISS on Jan. 27.

JAXA, Japan's space agency, hopes the project will help it build expertise for similar low-cost ferrying missions and push forward manned flights of Japan's own.

Cargo missions for the ISS have become more important now that the United States has scaled back its ability to launch supplies. Since 2009, the ISS has been manned by six astronauts, but keeping them fed and supplied has become a bigger challenge because of the retirement of the U.S. space shuttles.

NASA is linking up with commercial companies to launch future cargo expeditions.

JAXA officials say they are studying the possibility of reconfiguring the Kounotori vehicle — which is about the size of a large passenger bus — for manned flight.

Japan's space program has yet to attempt manned flight. Japan has a module attached to the space station that can be used by astronauts, but has relied on the United States to get them there. A Russian Soyuz is to take the next Japanese astronaut to the ISS in May.

Japan sent cargo on its first unmanned carrier to the ISS in 2009.

Money, more than technology, is generally seen as Japan's biggest hurdle.

JAXA's budget for last year was 180 billion yen ($2 billion), about one-fourteenth of what the U.S. spends on space exploration and less than half of what the EU spends, according to Japanese government estimates.

Even so, Japan boasts a reliable booster rocket in the domestically produced H-II series — the rocket used Saturday — and was one of the leaders in launching satellites.

But its program in recent years has been marred by setbacks.

Last month, a Japanese probe to Venus failed to reach orbit. Officials said they have not completely given up hope and are trying to reprogram the probe to try again in another five — or if that fails six — years.

Japanese scientists had been hopeful of success with the Venus probe after the country brought a probe back from a trip to an asteroid.

Japan has never succeeded in an interplanetary mission. It launched a mission to Mars in 1998 that was plagued by technical glitches and finally abandoned in 2003. Russia, the United States and the Europeans have successfully explored other planets.

Japan has also been overshadowed in recent years by China, which sent its first astronaut into space in 2003 and carried out its first spacewalk in 2008.

Carlina White

Carlina White

Carlina White, (AP) – More than two decades ago, a newborn patient with fever was abducted from a New York hospital, his mother crazy to return to the urgency of finding an empty bed. On Wednesday, police said the baby – now a woman – was found.

Carlina White was just 19 days old when she vanished from Harlem Hospital on August 4, 1987. The police searched for his captors, but never found enough evidence to indict the suspects. Her mother, Joy White, always felt that her baby was alive, his family said.

January 4, a woman known as Nejdra Nance, who grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut and now lives in Atlanta, contacted White, sending photos along baby that looked almost identical to Loved Carlina posted on the site for missing children. Nance says white she thought she could be his daughter.

“She said she was just a feeling, it felt different people from his farm, said maternal grandmother Nance, Elizabeth White, 71.” She looked, and then she found joy. ”

Joy White has contacted the New York Police Department to see if she could help determine whether the woman was really Carlina White.

“It seemed legitimate and credible, so I had disappeared to reach out to her, the detective said Martin Brown, who answered the call. DNA tests conducted on Joy White, her ex-husband, Carl Tyson Nance and 23-years match, police said. Nejdra Nance was Carlina White.

As part of their investigation, police detectives speak to retirement that handled the case years ago. As she was very young when she was kidnapped, it is impossible to know whether Nance has lived with the family during this time.

Nance was on his way back to New York from Atlanta on Wednesday, said Elizabeth White, and Joy White was en route to the airport to meet him. But they have already met once recently, when Nance came to New York with her 5-year-old daughter, Samani.

“It was wonderful, she did not even seem like a stranger, she has just the right person,” said Elizabeth White. “We all went there, we had dinner together, and her aunts were there. She brought her daughter beautiful. It was magical. ”

Elizabeth White said she did not ask too many questions Nance about how she grew and how she knew she was not a member of the family with whom she lived. She did not want to push too Nance.

This win is up there: VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman thinks this Indian side is a lot different from the ones that toured South Africa in the past and stands a very good chance to win its first series here.

A day after India’s come-from-behind victory, the Man of the Match of the Durban Test says the team went into the game with a lot of aggression. “Coming into this Test, we were very upset with what had happened in Centurion. The aggression was more here. As a fielding and bowling unit, we were more aggressive. That’s what we discussed before the second Test. This kind of aggression was lacking in Centurion,” Laxman said.

Laxman, who scored a match-winning 96 in the second innings of the Durban Test, thinks the turning point was the approach of the team on Day Two after being bowled out for 228 in the first innings.

“The turning point was our bowling on the second day. We knew the game would be gone with one partnership in their first innings. We did not let that happen. The body language, bowling and fielding were the difference between Durban and Centurion.”

Laxman rates the win as one of the side’s best. “This win is up there. This is supposedly the quickest and bounciest wicket in South Africa. It gives you that much additional joy. The Durban wicket is the most challenging one. It gives a lot of satisfaction to all of us.”

Laxman thinks the experience of previous tours has made the side more confident. “The key factor was the expectations we had coming into this tour. Playing in South Africa before has helped us. The win we had in Johannesburg in 2006 has also helped. We are probably much more confident than we were during past tours,” Laxman added.

The middle-order batsman thinks the team needs to get a decent start in the third Test. “As for Cape Town, it all depends on how we start. The first day of the match usually sets the tone for the Test. It is important that we play to the best of our abilities. We don’t have to think about the end result of winning the series. If we do well the small things, the result will look after itself,” he added.

Personally, Laxman is disappointed to have missed out on a century in Durban but is satisfied from the team’s point of view. “My conversion rate is not that great. From 49 fifties and 16 centuries. I would have been happy if I had got a century here but from the team’s perspective, I’m very satisfied to have bailed the side out of a very tough situation.”

Laxman, who has been consistently helping the side by accumulating runs with the tail-enders, says he is able to do that because of his personal rapport with them. “It boils down to experience and my personal rapport with them. Luckily, they work hard on their batting. So they take a lot of responsibility. We set ourselves small targets. We look at scoring five runs or seeing one over off. The most important thing is to know if they are comfortable. That’s what I have learnt. If one batsman is comfortable facing one bowler, only then do I give him the strike. It keeps the scoreboard ticking and shifts the pressure back on the opposition.”

New Jersey Mayor Uses Twitter to Help Residents Through Blizzard

Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Cory Booker is at it again — he’s been on Twitter since the start of this year’s “Snowpocalypse,” letting citizens know about the city’s cleanup efforts and personally digging out the cars of those in need.

This isn’t the first time that Booker — the de facto main character of the documentary series Brick City — has used the micro-blogging service to help those who need aid. During last winter’s blizzard, Booker came to the rescue when Jersey resident Ravie Rave tweeted that her elderly father’s walk was in need of shoveling.

This year, Booker is out in full force once more, keeping citizens up to date on the progress of cleanup, delivering supplies and getting Newark residents on the road again.

What do you think of the mayor’s use of Twitter? Do you wish your local government was as tech-savvy as Booker?

China passenger train hits 300 mph, breaks record

China passenger train hits 300 mph, breaks record
In this photo released by China's Xinhua news agency, a China Railway High-Speed (CRH) train enters Bengbu …

BEIJING – A Chinese passenger train hit a record speed of 302 miles per hour (486 kilometers per hour) Friday during a test run of a yet-to-be opened link between Beijing and Shanghai, state media said.

The Xinhua News Agency said it was the fastest speed recorded by an unmodified conventional commercial train. Other types of trains in other countries have traveled faster.

A specially modified French TGV train reached 357.2 mph (574.8 kph) during a 2007 test, while a Japanese magnetically levitated train sped to 361 mph (581 kph) in 2003.

State television footage showed the sleek white train whipping past green farm fields in eastern China. It reached the top speed on a segment of the 824-mile (1,318-kilometer) -long line between Zaozhuang city in Shandong province and Bengbu city in Anhui province, Xinhua said.

The line is due to open in 2012 and will halve the current travel time between the capital Beijing and Shanghai to five hours.

The project costs $32.5 billion and is part of a massive government effort to link many of China's cities by high-speed rail and reduce overcrowding on heavily used lines.

China already has the world's longest high-speed rail network, and it plans to cover 8,125 miles (13,000 kilometers) by 2012 and 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) by 2020.

The drive to develop high-speed rail technology rivals China's space program in terms of national pride and importance. Railway officials say they want to reach speeds over 500 kph (312 mph).

Wild Concept Cars at the 2010 LA Auto Show

Wild Concept Cars at the 2010 LA Auto Show
Automakers look to a brighter future in sunny Southern California.

Optimism is back in style in the automotive world. The concept cars on display during the 2010 LA Auto Show prove that automakers are again willing to take risks and push boundaries. After a couple dismal years of sales due to a global recession, manufacturers are exhibiting a renewed sense of creativity.

Some of the concept cars seen in Los Angeles rely on heritage to spark a new ideas for the 21st century. The aggressive-looking Audi Quattro Concept is a modern interpretation of the German company's famous all-wheel-drive sport coupes from the 1980s.

Other automakers chose to break all the rules and display cars that look ready to take flight or travel through time. The Jaguar C-X75 and Mercedes-Benz Biome concepts are not only wildly futuristic, they're absolutely gorgeous, and a sign of even more good things to come.

Mercedes-Benz Biome

This is the Mercedes-Benz you'll aspire to own in, say, 2310. The bright white concept looks like it belongs on the set of Star Trek. Yet the Biome was actually designed at the German company's design studio in Carlsbad, California. There's room for four-passengers inside, or so we're told, and the seating position is in a diamond format.

The best part is that Mercedes-Benz says the Biome can be grown from seeds, and not built in a traditional factory. It sounds crazy, but that's part of the fun with any dream car. Using genetically modified trees and powered by something called BioNectar4534, Mercedes-Benz says the Biome's bio-fiber cloth body would be grown organically, and on the road, the car would emit pure oxygen. The Biome reportedly would weigh only 875 lbs.

It will be several generations before anyone starts pondering the spec sheet for a genetically-built Mercedes like the Biome.

Jaguar C-X75 Concept

Following its impressive Paris debut, the Jaguar C-X75 turbine-electric hybrid supercar took center stage at the LA Auto Show. While very much a concept, the C-X75 represents Jaguar's new design face for upcoming models. That's excellent news, because this is one pretty kitty.

Even better is the fact that all this beauty is more than skin deep. At each wheel is an electric motor that weighs 100 pounds and provides 195 horsepower (145 kW) of power. Power for the electric motors comes from a 506-pound lithium-ion battery pack, which Jaguar claims takes a full charge in just 6 hours at 240 volts. Running only on electric power, the C-X75 will provide a driving range of 68 miles.

With the help of two micro gas turbines, the C-X75's range jumps to 560 miles. Jaguar claims the C-X75 can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, while top speed is reportedly 205 mph. All that turbine-generated power creates a lot of heat, as evidenced by sign at the exhaust outlets with the warning: Beware of blast.

Audi Quattro Concept

The Audi Quattro Concept is another Paris Auto Show veteran, but that did little to dampen enthusiasm for this muscular show car. The inspiration for this sport coupe stretches back a few decades. The German automaker built the Quattro Concept to celebrate 30 years of its Quattro all-wheel drive system and the Quattro Sport that dominated rallying in the 1980s.

Finished in Col de Turini white paint, the Quattro Concept is powered by a compact turbocharged five-cylinder engine that puts out a whopping 408 hp and 354 ft-lbs of torque. The chassis beneath the car comes from an Audi RS 5, with its wheelbase shortened and roof lowered. To further trim weight, the two-passenger Quattro has an aluminum body and hood, plus hatch and bumpers made of carbon fiber. The car weighs just 2,866 lbs.

Based on the positive reactions to the Jaguar C-X75 in Paris and Los Angeles, we don't see how Audi could decide not to build the potent Quattro.

Nissan Ellure Concept

The Nissan Ellure Concept, a world debut at the LA Auto Show, is meant to bring excitement back to the sedan category while meeting consumer demands for environmentally friendly vehicles. Thankfully, the Ellure's elegant exterior and classy cabin help the car meet these high expectations. The design is expected to heavily influence the next Altima and Maxima sedan.

The Nissan Ellure has what the Japanese automaker refers to as "rhythmic" shapes around the body. The polished grille is aluminum and acrylic, its wing shape apparently inspired by "Kamishimo," the Samurai's formal outer coat. The headlights are LEDs, with a light ribbon adding depth to their appearance.

Inside, the front seats are covered with black recyclable suede fibers and feature slender acrylic seat backs. The front seat passenger can make use of an ottoman (no joke). Under the hood is Nissan's next-generation hybrid propulsion system: a supercharged 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor with lithium-ion batteries.

Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept

Also seen for the first time in Los Angeles, Cadillac's Urban Luxury Concept addresses the move to smaller and more fuel-efficient city cars. The exterior shape of the Urban Luxury Concept carries Cadillac's strong and instantly recognizable sharp contours of its Art & Science design philosophy. The huge 19-inch wheels are pushed to the corners of the diminutive body to create a muscular stance and maximize interior volume.

A large windshield, overhead skylights and see-through A-pillars aid visibility while adding a spacious feel of the interior. The Cadillac Concept accommodates four passengers, with access to the cabin handled by huge chiseled door slabs that open scissor-style.

The Urban Luxury Concept's powertrain is a hybrid, featuring an electrically assisted turbocharged 1-liter inline-three-cylinder paired to a dual-clutch transmission. An engine start-stop function and regenerative braking help nudge the fuel economy to a claimed 56 mpg city and 65 mpg on the highway.

It remains to be seen whether the Cadillac family tree has room for a vehicle like the ULC. Yet itís exciting to see the American brand combine traditional luxury with the push towards greater fuel-efficiency.

Mazda Shinari Concept

The LA Auto Show was the first opportunity for the public to see the handsome Mazda Shinari concept. Pictures of the car have circulated online, yet this was the fist auto show appearance for the sedan that represents the brand's new design language.

Traditional Mazda design elements will be retained, such as the five-point grille and the prominent front fender shape, but the four-door Shinari embodies a new dynamic that blends sharp character lines with sculpted body shapes to convey a sense of power and elegance.

Crisp character lines, sculpted body panels, and a pronounced cab rearward proportion give the Shinari a powerful appearance. The attention to detail is remarkable for a show car. The satin-finish metal trim that frames the bottom of the grille splays out through the headlamp openings. This strip seems to travel through the wheel arch and re-emerges as a side vent accent.

Elements of this new design might soon appear on passenger sedans like the Mazda6, as well as replacements for sporty models like the MX-5 Miata and RX-8.

Subaru Impreza Design Concept

The Subaru Impreza Design Concept is an aggressive, but familiar, outlook for the all-wheel-drive-all-the-time company. Gone are the days of the three-box Subaru, as the overall line from the front of the car, through the bottom of the A-pillar, the roof, through the C-pillar and ultimately the trunk, is smooth and continuous. The front end -- with all the character lines, headlights, fog lights and air openings -- is much sharper and more pronounced than before.

For a company that has sometimes struggled to find its own look, the Impreza Design Concept is a safe step towards a more lasting long-term impression. The engine is a 2-liter version of Subaru's trademark Boxer configuration flat-four motor. It's mated to a continuously variable transmission that Subaru calls Lineartronic.

The EyeSight system is a clever tech touch, comprised of a series of cameras located at the front of the roof. EyeSight provides for collision mitigation, and can display the feed that it sees through the in-dash video system. The cabin is filled with video panels, including one located on the lower spoke of the steering wheel.

Indonesia's Loan Interest Rate Second Highest

Indonesia's Loan Interest Rate Second Highest

"How can we get better profit if the interest rate is still high?"

Rural credit interest rate in Indonesia is listed second highest after Myanmar worldwide. The high interest rate causes small- and medium-sized enterprises to have difficulties in competing with other countries.

Adviser of the Minister of Industry, Erna Zeta, stated that the loan interest rates in China and Thailand vary between four and eight percent. The interest rate in Indonesia stays at above ten percent.

"We still gain less investment. How can we get better profit if the interest rate is still high?" said Erna in Jakarta today, Oct 18.

According to Erna, the Ministry of Industry wants Bank Indonesia to urge banks that disburse credit to lower the loan interest rate.

Meanwhile, Director General of Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises, Euis Saidah, said that up until the end of August of 2010, the channeled rural credit reached Rp 24.7 trillion with the number of debtors at 3.1 million.

Plane crashes in India, 160 feared dead, 8 alive

Plane crashes in India, 160 feared dead, 8 alive
Indian firefighters carry a child, reportedly a survivor, out of the debris of an Air India plane that …

NEW DELHI – An Air India Express plane trying to land in the rain at a tricky hilltop airport in southern India overshot the runway, crashed and burst into flames at dawn Saturday, killing nearly 160 people, officials said. At least eight survived.

Dense black smoke billowed from the Boeing 737-800 aircraft surrounded by flames just outside Mangalore's Bajpe airport in a hilly area with thick grass and trees.

Firefighters sprayed water on the plane — which was traveling from Dubai — as others struggled to find survivors. An Associated Press photo showed two rescuers running up a hill carrying a girl who was about 7 years old and covered in foam to waiting medics. The child was later treated for severe burns in a Mangalore hospital.

Other rescue workers pulled out scores of burned bodies from the blackened tangle of aircraft cables, twisted metal, charred trees and mud at the crash site. Many of the dead were still strapped into their seats, their bodies burned beyond recognition.

Relatives of the victims, who had come to the airport to meet them, were seen weeping near the wreckage.

"The plane shook with vibrations and split into two," a survivor named Pradeep told CNN-IBN television. He said the plane's initial touchdown appeared smooth at first, but trouble started about 15 seconds later.

Pradeep, who uses only one name, jumped out of the aircraft with four others into a pit, he said.

The plane had a small fire at first, but then a large explosion set off a bigger blaze, said Pradeep, who injured his hand and suffered burns to his feet.

The plane was carrying 160 passengers and six crew members, Air India official Jitender Bhargava said.

"This is a major calamity," V.S. Acharya, home minister for the state of Karnataka, told CNN-IBN.

By Saturday afternoon, rescuers had pulled 80 bodies from the wreckage, Bhargava said. Eight survivors also had been rescued and were being treated in local hospitals, said Anup Srivastava, another official with the financially struggling Indian national carrier.

Air India runs cheap flights under the Air India Express banner to Dubai and other Persian Gulf destinations where millions of Indian expatriate workers are employed.

The crash could be the deadliest in India since the November 1996 midair collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed condolences and promised compensation for the families of the victims. Boeing said in a statement it was sending a team to provide technical aid to the government's crash investigation.

The crash took place about 6 a.m. when the plane tried to land at Bajpe, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) outside of Mangalore, and overshot the runway, Bhargava said.

Scores of villagers scrambled over the hilly terrain to reach the wreckage, and began aiding in the rescue operation. Pre-monsoon rains over the past two days caused low visibility in the area, officials said.

Abdul Puttur, a survivor, told CNN-IBN he jumped out of the wrecked plane and then pulled out two other passengers.

At Dubai International Airport, a special room was set up to assist relatives and friends of the Mangalore passengers at Terminal 2, a hub for many budget and small airlines. Some people came to the airport looking for information and were later referred to Air India's main office in Dubai, said Rasha Mansour, an airport spokeswoman.

The Mangalore airport's location, on a plateau surrounded by hills, made it difficult for the firefighters to reach the scene of the crash, officials said. Aviation experts said Bajpe's "tabletop" runway, which ends in a valley, makes a bad crash inevitable when a plane does not stop in time.

"If the pilot overshoots the runway, the aircraft will be in trouble," said Asif, an aviation expert who uses one name.

Asif, a longtime air traffic controller, said Air India has traditionally insisted that only pilots with more than 1,000 hours logged in the air be allowed to fly into tabletop runways.

"However, in recent years, Air India has hired a number pilots from abroad," he said. "Such expat pilots may not be very familiar with the terrain."

Accidents of this type, known as "runway excursions," are fairly common, though the majority end without injury or damage.

The International Civil Aviation Organization and pilots' groups have urged airports worldwide to construct 300 meter (yard)-long safety extensions at the end of each runway for extra protection.

Older airports in built-up areas or those in tight locations with little room for extensions are advised to install soft ground layers — known as arrestor beds — to slow planes, much as escape ramps on highways can stop trucks when their brakes fail.

Crash investigators will likely look into aquaplaning as a contributing factor in the crash because of the rain.

The crash came as the national carrier tries to weather serious financial difficulties.

In February, the government approved a $173 million cash infusion for the airline, which as suffered decades of mismanagement and underinvestment.
