UberTwitter, Twidroyd and UberCurrent suspended

Twitter pulls the plug on mobile apps

Users of UberMedia’s Twitter apps for Android, iPhone and BlackBerry have found that their favourites have been shut out of the social networking service on Friday. Twitter claims it has does so because of policy violations in the way the company used its data.

The move affects mobile clients UberTwitter, Twidroyd and UberCurrent, meaning that BlackBerry users can now only the official Twitter app on their phone.

"These violations include, but aren't limited to, a privacy issue with private Direct Messages longer than 140 characters, trademark infringement, and changing the content of users' Tweets in order to make money," said Twitter in a statement to Techcrunch and ReadWriteWeb.

According to Twitter, the company has failed to address issues dating back to April 2010, so has therefore decided to pull the plug.

“We ask all developers in Twitter ecosystem to abide by a simple set of rules that are in the interests of our users, as well as the health and vitality of the platform as a whole,” the spokesperson confirmed to the sites. “We often take actions to enforce these rules; in fact, on an average day we turn off more than one hundred services that violate our API rules of the road. This keeps the ecosystem fair for everyone.”

UberMedia's CEO has told TechCrunch that:

“We just talked to Twitter and discussed the various issues they raise. It took us by surprise because they didn’t raise them before. We started making the changes”

We’ve also contacted UberMedia for an official statement and will update the article if we get a reply.

UPDATE: UberMedia has got in touch with Pocket-lint with the following comment attributed to their CEO Bill Gross:

"Early Friday morning, Twitter shut off access to its service by several of our Twitter client applications: UberTwitter, Twidroyd and UberCurrent. Twitter then notified us that they believed we were in violation of several provisions of their terms of service.

"We were immediately in touch with Twitter, and the changes they asked us to make were very small. As a result, we have completed the changes, and new apps are currently being posted to their respective stores. Twitter has assured us that as soon as those changes were complete, they would reactivate our applications.

"Twitter also asked us to modify the name of UberTwitter. We began a process of changing the name three weeks ago by polling our users, and we've decided, based on their input, to change the product name to UberSocial, which we completed today.

"To our millions of loyal users, we appreciate your patience during this temporary period. We look forward to continuing our innovations on the Twitter platform."

UPDATE 2: Further clarification from UberMedia has confirmed that Echofon hasn't been affected as we previously reported, even though it's an UberMedia product.

However, the company has confirmed that the apps that have been affected aren't back online yet. They will, hopefully, reappear soon, as "they [Twitter] are aware that we've made the changes."

Sony Xperia Play 'PlayStation Phone' Launching in March on Verizon

BARCELONA - Sony Ericsson on Sunday unveiled the Xperia Play, also known as the "PlayStation Phone," as well as two more new Xperia smartphones, the Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro.

The Xperia Play will launch in the U.S. in March on Verizon Wireless, Sony Ericsson said during a press event here at Mobile World Congress. Pricing was not announced.

The Xperia Play will run Google Honeycomb. It is the "first mobile device to deliver an immersive gaming experience," said Bert Nordberg, president of Sony Ericsson.
MWC (Mobile World Congress)

At launch, the Xperia Play will have 50 titles available, which will increase on a weekly basis, Sony said. That includes "Guitar Hero," "Assassin's Creed," "Battlefield," and "Dead Space."

Late last month, Sony unveiled the PlayStation Suite, which will bring PlayStation content to Android phones. The Xperia Play is the first phone to feature PlayStation Suite, which will provide content through a PlayStation Network Store that Sony plans to launch by year's end.

Sony also promised social-networking components that will allow Sony Xperia users to play against one another.

There have been rumors about the "PlayStation phone" for months, but Sony was mum until a splashy Super Bowl ad confirmed its existence. "The smartphone with everything you need and the one thing you want," according to the tagline. The ad takes place in dark room off a back alley where a man appears to be operating on someone. He eventually starts to pull gauze off the patient's hands, and we see that he has attached thumbs to the green Google Android character. The Android makes his way to the street, thumbs attached, apparently ready to start gaming on the Android-based Xperia Play phone.

At CES this year, Sony Ericsson unveiled the Xperia Arc, a big (4.2-inch screen), slim (only 8.7mm) slab phone running Android 2.3 on a 1Ghz Qualcomm second-generation Snapdragon processor. Sony said that device will start shipping worldwide in March, but also added some new additions to the Xperia lineup - the Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro.

The Xperia Neo features an 8-megapixel camera, and a mobile Bravia engine, Sony executives said. As a result, Sony talked up the TV-related features, including HDMI access and support for HD video as well as the ability to use the Neo as a TV remote.

The Xperia Pro includes a slideout QWERTY keyboard, inspired by the company's X10 Mini Pro. The Xperia Pro includes a feature known as "smart keyboard," which will intuitively guess what application you want to use. If you're looking at e-mail, for example, and slide out your keyboard, the Pro will switch to a "reply" function.

The Xperia Neo and Pro will both run Android Honeycomb. Pricing was not announced.

Stay tuned for more hands-on images from Sunday's event.

How Does HDTV Work

HDTV, a high-resolution television system, gave a new dimension to television broadcasting. To know more about HDTV, you must read on.

HDTV, short for high-definition television, is a digital television broadcasting system that offers a relatively higher resolution than traditional television systems. The high-definition television system was conceptualized in the 1930s. The British HDTV service started in 1936. Sadly, it had to be discontinued in the following year. After 44 long years, the first HDTV demonstration was held in the United States. The following years witnessed the digitization of television signals. With the advent of digital technology of broadcasting, HDTV received greater popularity. Today, the use of HDTV is on the rise in Australia, Japan and the United States.

How does HDTV work?

HDTV requires high-definition signals in order to broadcast superior-quality picture. The signals transmitted over the air with antennas are received by a HD tuner, which is built into modern-day television sets. A separate tuner box can be used for television sets that do not have an inbuilt HD tuner. Certain cable television companies offer HDTV transmission through set-top boxes issued by them to the TV users. Some of the satellite TV systems of today feature support for the reception and transmission of TV signals.

An HDTV features a digital broadcasting of signals. Digital signals use patterns of 1s and 0s, which result in higher-resolution images. Also, digital images are less fuzzy and have more clarity. The transmission of digital signals results in sharper and more realistic colors and an improved picture quality. The digital compression methods used by HDTV allow the bandwidth of a single analog channel to be used by two high-definition TV channels.

HDTV offers a frame-rate of 25-60 frames per second. It uses an interlaced scanning system in contrast with the progressive scanning system used by traditional television. Progressive scanning is a method of displaying moving images in which all the lines of each frame are drawn in a sequence. Interlaced scanning is a method of electronic display wherein each row of pixels of a moving image is scanned using two frame fields, one for odd lines of the image and the other for its even lines. Interlacing helps in the reduction of flicker, thus improving picture quality.

There is a marked difference between the aspect ratios (the width of a picture divided by its height) of a traditional television and HDTV. High-definition television systems offer an aspect ratio of 16:9 as against 4:3 offered by traditional television. Greater aspect ratio means that HDTV comes with a wider screen and provides clearer pictures.

Since HDTV uses the Dolby Digital audio format, it is capable of producing a theater-quality sound. The sound quality offered by HDTV is equal to that offered by any good stereo system.

Advantages and Disadvantages of HDTV

From the overview of the working of HDTV, it is clear that HDTV offers several benefits over traditional television. It offers a better picture quality due to higher resolution. A wider screen makes the picture-quality more noticeable than a standard-sized one. The interlaced scanning technique used by HDTV help in bettering user experience. An excellent quality of sound resulting from the application of Dolby sound technology gives HDTV an added advantage.

However, not all television service providers conform to the exact HDTV specifications. The bit rates and bandwidths offered by them deviate from the theoretical values. For the real experience of all the advantages of HDTV, it is important to use appropriate cabling. Failing to use the standard cabling is sure to hamper overall quality of reception. Moreover, the digital signals used by HDTV are more prone to interference than analog ones. Also, HDTV requires the television users to depend on cable operators or satellite companies, which may levy huge fees for the transmission of television signals.

Until the advantages of HDTV continue to outweigh its shortfalls, HDTV will dominate the world of television. And that’s good news for all the movie buffs and sports fans like you and me!
