In some places in Indonesia traditional gold mining is one of the economic activities in which the miners earn sufficient income from these activities, the gold mining operations have also contributed to employment and also directly impact on improving the welfare of the community surrounding the mining area. However, due to mining activity is done traditionally, where the processing process does not use high technology and using only very simple tools.
So this mining activity has the potential to contaminate the surrounding environment due to the location and application of simple technologies such as the use of mercury as a binding element in the gold amalgamation process. The process of catching the gold in this way tend to have a negative impact on the environment around because at every stage of the process allows the degradation of the existing heavy metals, so it is feared may pollute the environment. The contamination occurs when mercury is used mostly as a binder element of gold, with the wasted water washing waste into landfill sites both on land and in the water of the river.
Processing of gold is done by following several steps including rock excavation, processing, and waste disposal. Each stage of this process in the ecological impacts that could disrupt the balance of the environment, so that the necessary steps are prudent in handling so that the risk of environmental damage can be minimized.
One of the areas of waste water disposal is typically community mining land in the vicinity of the processing which further flows to the river so that the longer the accumulation of metal content and other materials contained in the waste so that in the long run also affected the river ecosystem. As an ecosystem, the river is a place that is the target of waste disposal, resulting in higher levels of pollution, which in turn affects the biota contamination of water in it.
Pollution around the gold mining area including the river flowing around it is a serious problem and needs to be addressed. This situation requires action in order for fair handling of threats to the environment can be minimized. In addition, the state of the polluted environment will threaten the lives of the flora and fauna around him. This happens because of the threat to the ecosystem, in which the organism is alive, the case flow through the food chain so the food chain will occur pollutants flow which in turn will arrive in humans as part of the ecosystem. The entry of mercury in the human body will become a serious threat to health, especially diseases caused by heavy metals.
And one of the technologies that can be applied to minimize the content of heavy metals contained in the waste is the use of plants as biofiltration agent, so to determine the content of macro nutrient elements contained in waste water depicts the possible uses of plants as biofiltration agent. The results showed that the overall mining waste containing heavy metals such as Hg, As, Pb which exceeded the threshold environmental quality standard, besides containing macro nutrients that allow aquatic plants to grow in the waste water.
